In a post to CBS Sportsline.com, Danny Knobler suggest the Detriot Tigers as the perfect fit for free agent short stop Jose Reyes stating:

For a team that badly needs to add speed, and would be helped by having a true leadoff hitter who would push Austin Jackson to the bottom of the batting order, Reyes could be the difference-maker.

Not only that, but Tigers people say that the opposing player who made the biggest impression on them this season was Reyes, when he went 8-for-13 with two doubles and a triple in an interleague series at Comerica Park in June.

Knobler believes Reyes name is sure to come up during the Tigers organizational meetings next week and pursuing the reigning National League batting title will “come down to whether owner Mike Ilitch is prepared to tell his baseball people to look past the budget, as he has so many times before.”

Jon Heyman of SI.com confirmed Knobler’s report, adding current Tiger shortstop Johnny Peralta is a good enough hitter to move over to third base should the Tigers bring in Jose:

as @DKnobler said, #tigers people are weighing run at reyes, whod be good for their park. & peralta hits enough to play 3b about 13 hours ago via webReplyRetweetFavorite @SI_JonHeyman Jon Heyman

While I hate to admit it, I can’t say I disagree. The Tigers would be a nice fit for Reyes. But, I am sure that can be said for most teams rumored to court Jose. With that said, unlike the rumors of Jose landing in Washington or Milwaukee, rumors of the Tigers getting into the mix scare me. As Jay stated earlier today:

Just because the Nationals have spent money hand over fist doesn’t mean they’re going to do it every chance they get.  Also, Ian Desmondshowed a marked improvement over the second half of last year, batting .289 with 5 HR after the All-Star break.  As for Milwaukee, telling your fan base you don’t have the money to sign Fielder and then ponying up to sign Reyes doesn’t come across as a likely scenario, at least not at face value.”

The one thing that scares me about the Tigers is, as Knobler points out:

Tigers people always remind you that the owner has the final say, and also that Ilitch is never afraid to spend big for a player who could put them over the top. In every big signing the Tigers have made (and even some of the smaller ones), Ilitch was the driving force.”

Will he see Reyes as a difference maker? I sure hope not, because if the rumors of the Tigers getting involved are true, all we can do is hope Jose’s odds of remaining a Met didn’t just shrink to those of Lloyd’s  landing Mary:
