Im Jun-seop of the Korean Baseball Organization’s KIA Tigers found himself in a bit of a pickle recently during a game against the Samsung Lions. After delivering a pitch in the dirt, Jun-seop’s catcher decides on his own that the ball is OK to continue playing with. The umpire, on the other hand, thinks that the ball should be pulled and replaced with a new baseball. In a moment of classic non-communication the catcher and ump throw balls back to Jun-seop at the same exact time, which leads to a hilarious reaction by the stunned pitcher… It’s surprising that this sort of thing doesn’t happen more often, but I’m guessing that most catchers are trained to let the ump decide whether or not a ball is still playable or not after being thrown in the dirt. KIA’s catcher must have forgotten this little nugget of information, which turned out to be a good thing in the end, because if he didn’t then we wouldn’t have been blessed with this look of concern on Im Jun-seop’s face. I haven’t seen a man that scared of a couple of balls heading towards his face since my college roommate woke up right when I was in the midst of administering a drunken teabag to the chin.
