Johan Santana was the toast of the town for the past week after throwing the New York Mets' first no-hitter in franchise history. On Friday night, Yankees right-hander Hiroki Kuroda flirted with New York's second no-no in seven days.

Kuroda carried a no-hitter for 5 2/3 innings before Mets shortstop Omar Quintanilla broke up the bid for history with a double to left-center field.

"I've been there; I've pitched a no-hitter until the sixth or seventh inning," Kuroda said through his translator after throwing seven shutout innings of one-hit ball in the Yankees' 9-1 win. "I kind of knew that I was not going to be able to do it."

Prior to Quintanilla's hit, only one Mets batter had been on base; Josh Thole had reached first on Derek Jeter's fourth-inning error. Kuroda retired the first 10 batters of the game prior to the error, and he erased Thole quickly, getting David Wright to ground into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.

"There were days in L.A. where it felt like he could throw a no-hitter," said Russell Martin, who played three seasons as Kuroda's teammate with the Dodgers. "That's what it felt like today, like he had no-hitter stuff."

Kuroda struck out two batters during a perfect fifth, then sat down Ike Davis and Jason Bay to start the sixth. Having faced the minimum 17 batters to that point, Kuroda threw a 93 mph fastball that Quintanilla hit to left-center, collecting the Mets' first hit of the night.

Kuroda took a line drive off his left ankle on the final play of the seventh, but the ball popped up in the air before Alex Rodriguez caught it for the third out. Kuroda didn't return for the eighth, but X-rays were negative and he expects to make his next start.

"Especially with what Santana did last week, you kind of felt, 'Well, maybe this is going to happen here,'" Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We've seen a lot of special things happen at Yankee Stadium. Unfortunately it didn't, but he still pitched a great game."
