ST. LOUIS During the hectic and crazy minutes during the victory celebration following Game 7 of the World Series, then-Cardinals manager Tony La Russa forgot to wait by his phone for the traditional call from President Barack Obama. It wouldn't have mattered because the White House didn't call. "As we were getting into the World Series, we had a call from the White House to make sure they had the correct number for my office," La Russa told KMOX radio last week. "I didn't think about it until right now but I never did get a call." That changed Monday when the president phoned La Russa to congratulate the Cardinals on their 11th World Series title and to wish the skipper well in his retirement. President Obama also waited a number of days to call the 2010 World Series Champion San Francisco Giants. During their phone conversation Monday, President Obama told La Russa that the memorable extra-inning Game 6 of the World Series kept him up late and that it was one of the better sporting events he had seen in a long time. President Obama also congratulated La Russa on his 33-year managing career and noted that there was no better way to cap it off than by going out on top with a World Series Championship. The White House put a summary of the phone call on its website, whitehouse.gov. The Cardinals and La Russa were also formally invited by President Obama to be honored at the White House sometime next year.
