Gerald Laird is headed back to Detroit. The Tigers announced Friday that they have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Laird to be their backup catcher. Terms were not disclosed, but FOXSports.com's Jon Paul Morosi reports, according to an unidentified source, that it's 1 million contract. Laird hit .232 with one home run and 12 RBIs in 95 at-bats for the World Series Champion Cardinals last season. Gerald is a veteran catcher that is familiar with both our pitching staff and organization, Tigers GM David Dombrowski said. As a right-handed hitter, he is the solid complement to Alex Avila as our back-up catcher for the 2012 season. Laird previously played two seasons in Detroit, 2009-10. He was the Tigers' everyday catcher in 2009, playing in 135 games and hitting .225 in 477 at-bats. In a reduced role in 2010, he played in 89 games, hitting just .207. He departed Detroit after 2010 as a free agent.
