Travis Buck didn’t even have time to pack his bags and leave the city of Cleveland. The Tribe outfielder (and yes, potential first baseman) was recalled from Triple-A Columbus to take the roster spot of first baseman Matt LaPorta, who was placed on the 15-day DL this afternoon. Buck, who was sent down just last night to open a roster spot for Travis Hafner, has played five games this season at first in Columbus, but he has not played a major league game there in his career. Buck is hitting .226 with 2 HR and 8 RBI with Cleveland.
LaPorta suffered a right ankle sprain while being caught in a rundown between second and third base Friday night in the third inning. He left with the assistance of two trainers, unable to put weight on the foot. X-rays last night were negative, but the Indians apparently didn’t like what they saw on the MRI today.
In LaPorta’s absence, we can expect to see a mixture of Carlos Santana, Buck, and maybe even Jack Hannahan manning first base....
