After being ten games below .500 at one point, the Kansas City Royals made it to the .500 mark early this week before losing two in a row to the Cleveland Indians, falling to a 34-36 record. After the debacle of May, it’s good the see the Royals playing better baseball. But they’re not playing good enough to contend for the A. L. Central, much less be a playoff contending team. Losing two out of three games to the Indians proves that. The team batting average is .257, which is only point better than last week. They’re also dead last in the A. L. with 37 home runs and a .368 slugging average, so the power isn’t there. While first baseman Eric Hosmer shows improvement with a revised swing, third baseman Mike Moustakas is stuck with a .189 batting average and calls from some fans to send him down to the Minors and move Alex Gordon to third. Sending Moustakas to the Minors might help, but moving Gordon to third is a bad idea. Remember one of the reasons the Royals moved Gordon to the o...

Royals Help Line: All eyes on 'Ace' Ventura

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A look at the Royals' prospects who are rising or falling: YORDANO VENTURA, RHP "Ace" Ventura, recently promoted to Triple-A Omaha, has been on Royals' fans radar since last summer when he dazzled onlookers with his 100-mph fastball at the Future's Game during All-Star weekend at The K. After a slow start at Double A this year, Ventura...

Numbers show Salvador Perez is a worthy All-Star

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Maybe it's the barbecue sauce. Maybe it's Ned Yost's lineup epiphany. Maybe it's the presence of George Brett in uniform every day, giving the Kansas City Royals back their swagger, the guts that defined the franchise for a generation. In truth, it's probably all of those things. Also, this: Since June 4, when catcher Salvador Perez returned...

Royals continue to wage the 'War on Walks'

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Among Royals fans and bloggers, it is a phenomenon known as the Royals' "War on Walks." For years now, decades even, the Royals have been one of the worst teams in baseball at drawing bases on balls. In fact, the last time the Royals finished in the top half of the American League in walks was 1989. Far more common has been the Royals finishing...

Orlando Calixte could be deadline trade chip

by John Viril— Coming into the 2013 season, Baseball America rated 21-year-old SS Orlando Calixte the 9th best prospect in the Kansas City system. Promoted to AA NW Arkansas to begin 2013, Calixte struggled early in the season. He hit .198/.244/.296 for a paltry .540 OPS in April. Since that rough beginning, Orlando Calixte has progressively improved the last two months. He hit...

Royals' third-base coach owns up to baserunning blunder

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- When you're a third-base coach in the big leagues, you automatically sign up for instant criticism. Royals third-base coach Eddie Rodriguez understands that. And he's OK with the heat he's taking for his mistake in Cleveland on Tuesday night when he gave the stop sign to speedy David Lough, who represented the tying run, after Alcides Escobar singled...

The Royals and Facing It

The Royals allowed four runs Tuesday night. Fairly ordinary total, four runs. Not too few to score; not too many to allow. There were 16 games on Tuesday. In 13 of them, at least one team scored at least four runs. In two of them, both teams scored at least four runs. Four might be the least remarkable run total. But then, there’s a thing about these Royals. That was only the second...

Royals sign supplemental pick Sean Manaea to record deal

Concerns over the health of Sean Manaea’s hip caused him to drop in the 2013 MLB Draft. Those concerns have not stopped the Kansas City Royals from giving the left handed pitcher a hefty $3.55 million bonus. The bonus the Royals will pay Manaea is more than double the assigned value for the 34th slot which is [...]

Kauffman Stadium does not Prevent Walks

by John Viril— Yesterday, Kansas City Royals general manager Dayton Moore blamed his team’s historical low walk rate on their big home ballpark. In an interview with Fox Sports columnist Jeffrey Flanagan, Moore said, “We have the largest ballpark in terms of square footage of any ballpark in baseball. When pitchers come here, they have the mindset to use that park — put the...

Bruce Chen, Saber-Savvy Southpaw

Bruce Chen isn’t getting younger. The journeyman left-hander — currently with the Kansas City Royals — celebrated his 36th birthday yesterday. Since signing out of Panama, in 1993, he has made 365 big-league appearances. He has played for 10 teams. Chen has gotten smarter as he’s gotten older. He has long survived on guile, and in recent years, he’s developed an appreciation...

Preview: Royals open three-game set with White Sox at Kauffman

(AP) -- The last thing the Chicago White Sox need right now is a matchup with Kansas City Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie. The right-hander has completely shut down Chicago since being acquired by the Royals last summer, and he'll look to add to the visiting White Sox's woes in the opener of a three-game series Friday night. Guthrie came to Kansas City in a deal for left...

Series Preview 25: White Sox at Royals

The White Sox nightmare road trip concludes this weekend with a trip to one of their favorite Houses of Horror, Kaufmann Stadium in Kansas City for a three game set with the Royals.  The Sox are 1-6 on the trip after being swept in Minnesota by the Twins and have lost seven of their last eight total.
