The 6-3, 185-pound lefty from Mount Olive went one inning in relief and struck out the side in the Padres 6-0 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Layne, who was promoted earlier that day from Double-A San Antonio showed no signs of being nervous as two of his three strikeouts were against Brian McCann and Dan Uggla.

“I had a lot of fun,” Layne told MLB.com’s Corey Brock. “It was cool. I never thought it was going to happen. And to be honest, I don’t know if I’ve ever struck out the side.

Padres activate Grandal, put Hundley on 15-day DL

The San Diego Padres have activated rookie Yasmani Grandal and placed fellow catcher Nick Hundley on the 15-day disabled list with a bruised right knee. The team announced the moves before Friday night's game against San Francisco. Grandal had been on the DL since July 31 with a strained muscle on his right side. San Diego Padres right-hander Tim Stauffer, on the disabled list for a strained right elbow, could miss the remainder of the season. Prime Nine: San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres arguably have the best farm system in the game of baseball. I say arguably because these things always can be argued.
