Early this afternoon, Matt Bandi, James Santelli, and I had a Twitter conversation about when we expected to see Gerrit Cole, the merits of letting him dominate in the minors vs. struggle a bit in the Majors, and what the Pirates were hoping to see from him in Indianapolis in general. I'm sticking with my earlier prediction, that Cole will get just about as many starts with Indianapolis as he got in Altoona and Bradenton, and that we should probably expect him in the Pirates' rotation by early to mid June at the earliest.  All of that being said, Will Carroll, baseball injury writer and Indianapolis native, Tweeted this out today:  Opening Day in Indy won't be Cole vs Bauer. Cole's being matched up with 5 starter for Pittsburgh, which says he won't be around long. — Will Carroll (@injuryexpert) April 2, 2013 Tim Williams, who knows as much about the Pirates' system as anyone, pointed out that that may be reading into things too much:  ...

A.J. Burnett has rosin bag explode on him during Opening Day start (Animated)

Pittsburgh Pirates ace A.J. Burnett had a pretty rough first game of the season on Monday. His pitching performance was actually quite solid, as Burnett threw 5.2 innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits. He also managed to strike out 10 Chicago Cubs, but the Pirates were unable to give him any run support and went on to lose 3-1. Oh, and then there was the whole exploding...

First Pitch: Can the Pirates Get Impact Talent to the Upper Levels?

Gregory Polanco (left) and Alen Hanson (right) will try to repeat their 2012 seasons at the next level, and eventually try to make the successful jump to the upper levels. Today I previewed the 2013 Indianapolis Indians and Altoona Curve. Tomorrow I’ll go over the Bradenton Marauders and the West Virginia Power. In writing the previews, there’s one thing I noticed about the talent...

Pirates Pregame: Update on Injured Pitchers

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle addressed the status of several of the team’s injured pitchers prior to today’s game against the Chicago Cubs. Francisco Liriano threw off a mound yesterday and Charlie Morton threw a simulated game today, Hurdle said. “All our guys are making progress,” he said. Jeff Karstens is still nursing an inflamed right shoulder. Hurdle said...

A.J. Burnett Falls For The Old Exploding Rosin Bag Trick

It is safe to say that A.J. Burnett isn’t having a perfect day so far, and an exploding rosin bag is just the icing on the cake of giving up three runs to the Cubs in just 5.2 innings. [Deadspin] Article found on: Next Impulse Sports

Wandy on the mound, Gaby still at first base

I know that this is a bit of a leftover from the really bad times of being a Pirate fan, but whenever the Pirates start out the season 0-1 there's a voice in the back of my head that says, "If the Pirates can't win this game, they might never get to .500 again!" I don't really think that's true this year (nojinxnojinxnojinx), but the voice is still there...

Game 2: Pirates 3 Cubs 0

The list of things that I don't really understand in baseball is infinite, but somewhere near the top of it is this: the veteran pitcher who's out on the mound and not quite pitching like himself, but still has things so completely under control that you never really doubt him. That was Wandy Rodriguez on Wednesday night against the Cubs. Rodriguez is mostly a ground ball...

A Cold Opening Day Loss

Baseball.  It’s finally here.  For better or for worse, the Pittsburgh Pirates are once again playing baseball at beautiful PNC Park.  Even today’s rain and snow mix couldn’t keep away the crowd of 39,078 from watching their beloved (somehow, even if it’s too deep down to admit sometimes) Pirates.  The Pirates rewarded their fans with…

Game 1: Cubs 3 Pirates 1

The easiest and probably most accurate way to describe the Pirates' 3-1 loss to the Cubs on Opening Day at PNC Park is probably this: it was cold out and when it's cold out, hard-throwing pitchers seem to do well, and as a result AJ Burnett and Jeff Samardzija combined for 19 strikeouts between them in just 13 2/3 innings combined work.  Burnett was particularly awesome...
