DETROIT -- Apparently the discussion over Tuesday night's lineup was not finished. There was some question as to whether manager Jim Leyland told radio play-by-play broadcaster Dan Dickerson that Delmon Young -- who's 3-for-20 against Cleveland's starter Tuesday, Justin Masterson -- asked to sit out the game. Here's what Leyland told Dickerson: "Hes real nasty on right-hand pitching (meant hitting). A lot of people say, Well Delmons really hot. Youre crazy; you gotta play him. Well Delmon doesnt really want to face Masterson because of the way he runs that ball in on him. Hes tough on him. "And Ill tell you what: I like it when a player is honest about stuff like that, says Hey, I struggle with a guy like that. Thats when you do pick your day, as Ive talked about my whole career here, to play somebody else. "Donnie Kelly is like 5-for-16 or 5-for-15 off him. This has been set up for four or five days. Get Prince (Fielder) off his feet for a day....

Leyland: There's been no letdown after White Sox series

Manager Jim Leyland disagrees with the notion that his Detroit Tigers are having a letdown after sweeping the Chicago White Sox. After gaining a tie for first in the AL Central during the weekend, Detroit fell back when it lost Monday while Chicago was beating the Minnesota Twins. The Tigers lost a second consecutive one-run game to the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night, falling...

Game 2012.136: Indians at Tigers

Detroit Tigers, 72-63, 2nd place, 1 back, WC not gonna happen. Well, that’s baseball.  And you’ve got to tip your hat to Cy Masterson. Etc. Etc. See what happens when you don’t have a plan? Hopefully Kevin will use the day off tomorrow to devise something good. Or maybe we should all use the time to work on our lineup submissions. For his part, Jim Leyland had an explanation...

Tigers lose second straight to Indians

DETROIT (AP) -- Jim Leyland loaded the lineup with lefties against Justin Masterson, then watched his Detroit Tigers struggle to another loss. Afterward, there wasn't a hint of panic in his voice. "I'm not frustrated," Leyland said. "I'm not going to change. We've been the same all year. We come here ready to do our job and do our best." Don...

Tigers ball boy picks up fair ball, much to the disgust of RF Brennan Boesch (video)

A Detroit Tigers ball boy had an embarrassingly awkward experience during Tuesday’s game against the Cleveland Indians, something I imagine he’s still shuddering in horror over. During the top of the 3rd inning with the Tribe leading 2-0, Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera hit a ball right down the first base line that first-base umpire James Hoye ruled [...]

Justin Verlander Is Really Good

Since the start of the 2009 season, there have been only two players to post a WAR that is greater than or equal to 25.  One of these players, as I’m sure you suspected, is Albert Pujols, who was right on the line with an even 25.  The other player, coming in at 27.4 wins above replacement, is Tigers’ starter Justin Verlander.  Verlander is not only first on the list, but...

Tribe can't complete sweep vs. Tigers

DETROIT (AP) -- Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Prince Fielder added a solo shot in the eighth to help the Detroit Tigers avoid a three-game sweep with a 7-1 victory Wednesday night over the Cleveland Indians. Detroit's Doug Fister (8-8) allowed a run and four hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked one. Ubaldo Jimenez (9-15) gave up four...

Tigers looking into Elvis Andrus for 2013?

Despite what happens for the Tigers the rest of the season, general manager Dave Dombrowski will probably decline the club option on shortstop Jhonny Peralta and look to upgrade the position. The importance of the position too could be an area that Dombrowski makes a huge splash with considering his track record in previous offseasons with the team. The question though is who could...

Tigers Proving That Winning Divisions Only Easy on Paper

It wasn’t supposed to go down like this. As August turns to September in this sometimes God forsaken 2012 baseball season, this isn’t whatTigers fans had in mind for Labor Day weekend. The worries were supposed to be the usual for this time of the year: getting the kids back to school; figuring out what to throw on the grill as the outdoor cooking season winds down; wondering...

MLB managers who could be on the chopping block

A tweet from ESPN's Keith Law last night got my brain racing. Law wondered if Jim Leyland would take the fall in Detroit if the Tigers don't make the playoffs in response to a reader asking if Joe Girardi would get axed in New York if the Yankees missed the playoffs. I pitched the same thing about Mike Scioscia in Anaheim, and Law agreed that Scioscia could also get the axe...

Tigers make Masterson look masterful in 3-2 loss

The Detroit Tigers continue to be one of the most difficult teams to get a gage on and one of the most frustrating teams to watch. Tuesday night the Tigers, who are in the midst of an American League Central pennant race with the Chicago White Sox made another mediocre to bad pitcher look like a consistent All-Star. This time Indians starter Justin Masterson feasted on Tigers hitters...

Indians outlast Tigers once again

DETROIT (AP) -- Justin Masterson pitched six solid innings, and the Cleveland Indians beat Detroit 3-2 on Tuesday night for their second straight victory over the playoff-chasing Tigers. Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer for Detroit, but the Tigers missed another opportunity against a struggling team. Masterson (11-12) allowed two runs and four hits. He walked one and struck out...

Detroit Tigers Ride Explosive Eighth Inning to Pull Away From Cleveland Indians, Halt Losing Streak

After two straight losses to the Cleveland Indians left plenty scratching their heads, the streaky Detroit Tigers finally put together enough offense late to get the job done. Doug Fister was strong, Miguel Cabrera contributed three RBI’s and the Tigers … Continue reading →

9/5 Game Recap: Indians 1 - Tigers 7
