First it was right-handed hitters not being able to solve left-handers and now the lefties' inability to do anything with right-handers is stalling out the Detroit offense.

Phil Hughes stymied the Tigers on four hits and eight strikeouts over nine innings Sunday in a 5-1 victory by the New York Yankees.

Detroit's only run came on a solo home run by Prince Fielder in the fourth.

"He was consistently able to work inside, with authority," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

"He did it all day and we made absolutely no adjustment to it," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "The wind was blowing 800 mph (to right), the ball was flying out of the ballpark and we were sitting there fighting it off like we have a hit-and-run on. That was disappointing."

Fielder was exonerated from the blame but Leyland said, "our left-handers -- aside from Prince -- had bad at-bats. We kept flicking popups to left field, instead of someone looking in there and turning on one."

Brennan Boesch, Don Kelly and Quintin Berry were 0-for-10 with three strikeouts plus a walk.

"I was disappointed," Leyland said. "We were chicken-winging popups to the opposite field. That's not good. I'm sorry. That's just not good enough."

For a time it was Delmon Young and Jhonny Peralta making outs and making it easy for opposing managers to bring in lefty relievers to shut Detroit down. Young has been hitting well since early May, going 30-for-103 since May 5, while Peralta has been hitting in spots.

Now Detroit's lefties aren't carrying the load. It's one of several reasons the Tigers continue to slide in the standings.
