Manager Jim Leyland disagrees with the notion that his Detroit Tigers are having a letdown after sweeping the Chicago White Sox. After gaining a tie for first in the AL Central during the weekend, Detroit fell back when it lost Monday while Chicago was beating the Minnesota Twins. The Tigers lost a second consecutive one-run game to the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night, falling 3-2. Detroit is now 17-21 in games decided by the slimmest of margins. "It's like Manny (Acta, the Indians manager) said," Leyland noted. "They pitch good against us. "As for the talk we've had a big-series hangover, that's totally false. In the first inning (Monday), we loaded the bases and had scored a run with one out." Leyland said he could only recall one game all season where he thought his team might been flat, but it hadn't occurred recently. "Effort is not the problem with this club," Leyland said. "We come here steady every day. W...

Tigers lose second straight to Indians

DETROIT (AP) -- Jim Leyland loaded the lineup with lefties against Justin Masterson, then watched his Detroit Tigers struggle to another loss. Afterward, there wasn't a hint of panic in his voice. "I'm not frustrated," Leyland said. "I'm not going to change. We've been the same all year. We come here ready to do our job and do our best." Don...

Game 2012.136: Indians at Tigers

Detroit Tigers, 72-63, 2nd place, 1 back, WC not gonna happen. Well, that’s baseball.  And you’ve got to tip your hat to Cy Masterson. Etc. Etc. See what happens when you don’t have a plan? Hopefully Kevin will use the day off tomorrow to devise something good. Or maybe we should all use the time to work on our lineup submissions. For his part, Jim Leyland had an explanation...

MLB managers who could be on the chopping block

A tweet from ESPN's Keith Law last night got my brain racing. Law wondered if Jim Leyland would take the fall in Detroit if the Tigers don't make the playoffs in response to a reader asking if Joe Girardi would get axed in New York if the Yankees missed the playoffs. I pitched the same thing about Mike Scioscia in Anaheim, and Law agreed that Scioscia could also get the axe...

Justin Verlander Is Really Good

Since the start of the 2009 season, there have been only two players to post a WAR that is greater than or equal to 25.  One of these players, as I’m sure you suspected, is Albert Pujols, who was right on the line with an even 25.  The other player, coming in at 27.4 wins above replacement, is Tigers’ starter Justin Verlander.  Verlander is not only first on the list, but...

Tigers looking into Elvis Andrus for 2013?

Despite what happens for the Tigers the rest of the season, general manager Dave Dombrowski will probably decline the club option on shortstop Jhonny Peralta and look to upgrade the position. The importance of the position too could be an area that Dombrowski makes a huge splash with considering his track record in previous offseasons with the team. The question though is who could...

Tigers Proving That Winning Divisions Only Easy on Paper

It wasn’t supposed to go down like this. As August turns to September in this sometimes God forsaken 2012 baseball season, this isn’t whatTigers fans had in mind for Labor Day weekend. The worries were supposed to be the usual for this time of the year: getting the kids back to school; figuring out what to throw on the grill as the outdoor cooking season winds down; wondering...

Tigers make Masterson look masterful in 3-2 loss

The Detroit Tigers continue to be one of the most difficult teams to get a gage on and one of the most frustrating teams to watch. Tuesday night the Tigers, who are in the midst of an American League Central pennant race with the Chicago White Sox made another mediocre to bad pitcher look like a consistent All-Star. This time Indians starter Justin Masterson feasted on Tigers hitters...

Corey Kluber started his 7th game in the  Major Leagues, He never had a win for the Indians until he beat the Detroit Tigers.
