April 15, 2012: Matt Carpenter of the St. Louis Cardinals went 4-for-4 with a triple, home run and five RBI to power the Cards past the Chicago Cubs to a 10-3 victory. The home run was the first of his major league career.
Line: 4 AB | 1 R | 4 H | 5 RBI; 3B | HR (1)
My fantasy perspective: Cardinals’ fans knew Carpenter as the potential heir apparent to the first base job after Albert Pujols signed with the Los Angeles Angels this offseason but the rest of the baseball world got a taste of what he’s expected to bring once he earns a full-time job. In eight games this season (four straight starts at first base), he’s hitting .409 (9-for-22) with five extra base hits (two doubles, two triples and a home run) for a .818 SLG with a 1.235 OPS while scoring four runs and driving in 10.
Primarily a third baseman in the minors, Carpenter worked to add first base and outfield to his repertoire this winter. ESPN and CBS leagues have him listed at 3B only but Yahoo! has him as a 1B/3B player ...
