Today and tomorrow are two of the lamest days of the sports year, so for now I'm just going to post a bunch of links to interesting things I've seen the last couple of days. If we want to go back to the Justin Upton front, Nick Piecoro reports that Kevin Towers wants "Major League" players for Upton. It seems insane to me to trade a player like Upton and not ask for a team's best prospects back in return, but I suppose you could use it as a glimmer of hope that the Pirates could pull off a trade for Upton without having to move Gerrit Cole or Jameson Taillon. More than likely, though, what it means is that the Pirates are just a bad fit for the D'Backs and it's time to move our sights, as fans, elsewhere. Ben Duronio at FanGraphs looks at James McDonald's slider and how he's used it to find success.  Russel Carleton, aka Pizza Cutter, returns to Baseball Prospectus with some words of wisdom for aspiring sabermetricians.  XKCD looks at what would...

Short supply of Upton trade partners

It's hard to know exactly what to make of Kevin Towers' calculus regarding Justin Upton. Towers has clearly taken the "situation" beyond the rumor stage by talking openly about his willingness to listen to offers for the closest thing the Diamondbacks have to a superstar. For the media, such candor is a refreshing and dramatic departure from 99 percent of what...

Diamondbacks’ Justin Upton Is On The Trading Block

Arizona Diamondbacks General Manager Kevin Towers says the team is still in “win mode” and is dangling 24-year-old outfielder and general all-around good player Justin Upton out there, but he apparently only wants players in return who will help the Major League club, not prospects. You know, because Upton still IS a prospect at this point. Upton is hitting .273 with a with...

D-backs exit break with momentum, questions

The Diamondbacks recovered so nicely in the final weekend of the pre-All Star Game schedule that it's easy to see them carrying that momentum into another September stretch drive. Winning three straight from the NL West-leading Dodgers represented a big step forward, and it came at just the right time. By shaving three games off the division lead in less than 72 hours to conclude...

Justin Upton to the Texas Rangers Makes Sense

Justin Upton in a Texas Rangers Uniform? Photo courtesy of SI.com The Texas Rangers have proven themselves to be a top-notch organization that is willing to make moves and spend money to seriously compete for a World Series championship. The Rangers have loaded their MLB squad with an extremely athletic lineup to go along with a pitching staff with multiple power arms. The off-season...

Pitcher Profile: Trevor Bauer Makes Quick Work of the AAA Dodgers

After an up-and-down four-inning debut, then a real stinker against the Padres, Arizona’s prized pitching prospect Trevor Bauer was in dire need of a positive outing in his third start heading into the All-Star break.  With the Diamondbacks hoping to push for a Wild Card berth, and with Bauer on top of many pitching prospect lists, he has a lot of eyes on him to deliver a solid...

D-backs look to start second half on high note

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs had their issues during the season's first half, though both have reasons for optimism after finishing strong before the break. Ian Kennedy looks to guide Arizona to a fourth straight victory while Chicago rookie phenom Anthony Rizzo tries to stay hot in the opener of a three-game series Friday at Wrigley Field. The defending NL West...

D-backs listening on Upton, but unlikely to bite

PHOENIX So Justin Upton is available. Put that in the same file as the sun rises daily. Bulletin: Kevin Towers has been known to make a trade. Check the resume. Towers wife and his three bulldogs are safe, but everything else is negotiable. That being said, Upton is almost certainly going nowhere but into his usual No. 3 spot in the batting order when the second half of the Diamondbacks...

Mets should stay away from Quentin/Upton types

July 30, 2004 the Mets lost to the 1st place Braves in Atlanta by the score of 3-1, dropping them back to seven games behind in fourth place with a record of 49-53.  The team responded by trading their top prospect Scott Kazmir for then Rays ace Victor Zambrano.  Kazmir is now out of baseball and couldn't even get an invite from his old team (Mets) after an audition but that...

Trade rumors: Upton, Quentin, Hamels, Fuentes and Tigers

Here's a running list of trade rumors around the Major Leagues: – Even though they're still contenders, the Arizona Diamondbacks are willing to trade outfielder Justin Upton, but only if they're “dazzled” by an offer according to a source close to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports. Rosenthal adds that General Manager, Kevin Towers, “is willing to listen on virtually...
