Over the course of the next several months, many of us are anticipating what could be an extraordinary period in Detroit professional sports lore. Enthusiasm should be high. The Tigers are poised to become a playoff team for the third consecutive season; the Lions are embracing a new, mature attitude and appear -- at least on paper -- to be better; and with the additions the Red Wings and Pistons have made during the offseason, its good to be a Detroit sports fan. For those hopes and dreams of playoffs and championships to become reality, though, players must perform. It sounds simple enough, and some athletes certainly do live for that moment of sports immortality. But the pressure to produce is extreme and comes with the territory. Thats why when I look at the city's current crop of athletes, the one who has the most pressure on him hasnt even put on a Detroit uniform yet. Nick Castellanos, once hes finally called up, will be under more scrutiny than any Detroit player in recent memory. And unless he arrives in Motown by walking across the Detroit River from Windsor, theres no way hell be able to live up to our lofty expectations. I realize that Castellanos, 21, isn't expected to lead the Tigers to a World Series title, and hell play on a team thats filled with All-Star talent; however, his reputation has been greatly enhanced by the Tigers making him an untouchable in all trade talks. Essentially, hes been labeled a cant-miss prospect by the way the team has treated and coddled him. In my book, I would have preferred seeing Castellanos already playing in Detroit, because once he slips on the Olde English D -- hopefully, stabilizing left field -- he'll have zero margin for error. Judgment on Castellanos will be swift. He'll be deemed an instant star or an instant bust. A player can't have any more pressure than that, sports fans.
