Tell me if you’ve heard a similar story like this before: The Los Angeles Angels look like a team poised for a roll entering the next following week. In this case, entering July. After clinching at least a series win and perhaps a possible sweep of the Houston Astros after a 7-2 victory on Saturday, the Angels roller-coaster ride of a season seems to be moving upward, for now. The team has now put together five consecutive wins, and will take the mound Sunday going for their second consecutive series sweep. It seems as if every week the Angels obituary on the 2013 season is about to be prepared. I’ve read several other articles or listened to analysts explain their beliefs of how the team should be sellers at the trade deadline, or their pitching can’t take them the places they need to go (which I still believe sort of), and that Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton just can’t get it done anymore. Then BAM, all of a sudden they start putting together their best all-around performances of the season. Hamilton is starting to look like a baseball player again, not exactly with his bat quite yet but with his glove. The superstar slugger made several nice plays and catches in the outfield the past couple games. Maybe the glove gets him going, and wakes him up from his year-long slump. And has Joe Blanton really only given up five runs in his past three starts? and is he really about to finish June with the most strikeouts in a single month in his career at 40? You have to wonder what angel from heaven is helping him. Somehow, I don’t know how, but somehow, this team is still alive. I am going to argue here that the Angels have been unlucky so far this season, and bad luck usually runs out doesn’t it? If their sluggers were hitting like they were supposed to, and remove a few bullpen lapses this season, this team would have a winning record. However, for the Angels front office, this up and down play leaves the team stuck in limbo. Are they buyers at the trade deadline? Are they sellers? Do they think they can really obtain a wild card spot? These questions for now can stay unanswered. But it seems after watching this team sweep a Tigers team, by literally scorching them, and then to see them finally figure out a Astros team that has had their number all season, luck is now on their side. The roller coaster at the time of this article is rising up the tracks, does it continue to escalate? or does it drop and free fall down again? The wild ride continues Sunday in Houston. Keep your seat belts on.
