PLAYERS: Mike Trout
TEAMS: Los Angeles Angels
The Angels have disappointed in the first half. Can they get it together and make a run? Team: Los Angeles Angels Record: 44-49 (11 GB) Biggest Surprise of First Half: The outfield duo of J.B. Shuck and Peter Bourjos. Bourjos has raked in the 40 games he’s played this season, producing a slash line of .333/.392/.457. To put that in perspective, Bourjos’ slash line for his first three MLB seasons was .247/.301/.402. Of course, 40 games is an extremely small sample size, and his 2013 numbers are somewhat inflated due to an unsustainable BABIP (batting average on balls in play) of .404. But production is production. The problem with Bourjos is his inability to stay on the field. Having already missed 38 games earlier in the season, Bourjos went back to the DL on June 30 with a broken wrist. Shuck, however, has been impressive in his place. Before 2013, Shuck only had 37 games of ML experience, all with the Houston Astros in 2011. That hasn’t stopped him from putting up some solid numb...

A Papi Trout

As Major League Baseball heads into the All-Star break two players stood out for me personally this week. Being a former pitcher, surprisingly neither of them are pitchers. Instead, they are two hitters from the American League, Mike Trout and David Ortiz. First, there is David Ortiz. Big Papi this week became the leader in hits by a designated hitter. Ortiz is 37 years old and...

Young Ones, They Are Bryce Harper turns 21 in another three months, at which point he'll probably have around 50 career home runs in his first 1,000 major league ABs. Fantasy Baseball All-Star Break Rankings - Outfielders

Mike Trout continues to live up to the hype and is having an excellent season without the help of Albert Pujols, and Josh Hamilton. Justin Upton started hot and finished hot to keep himself valuable. He hit 12 home runs in April and has hit just 4 over his last 235 ABs. But he did hit .319 in July before the break so that is a good sign of things to come. His brother B.J. on the...

Ice Berg Dead Ahead

The always enjoyable to read Ted Berg, now with USA Today, sets us straight on how fans view their top prospects and writes: Great players in the minors almost always graduate to the next level, but great players in the Majors have no place else to go. On the rare occasion a minor leaguer is in fact good enough to dominate in the bigs, he doesn’t hang around on the farm for long...

Angels end 1st half with sweep by the Mariners, lose 4-3

After hitting a hot streak and looking like a legitimate contender for .500 1st half (don't laugh) they end the run with a sweep in Seattle. Despite ending the 1st half on the season under .500 and facing an ugly sweep against the Mariners the Angels are still in a decent spot to make a run after the break. Out of the Angels next 20 games 13 of them are against teams ahead of...
