It’s essentially a deal swapping DFA’d pitchers, as both Marmol and Guerrier were designated for assignment by their respective clubs within the past ten days.
Both pitchers have had a rough go of it in 2013: Guerrier is 203 with a 4.80 ERA in 2013, underwhelming Los Angeles after signing a 3-year, $12M deal in 2010.

As long as the price tag fits...

For fans of Carlos Marmol, it’s been a confusing few days, even beyond the usual confusion baseline. On Tuesday, Marmol was shipped from the Cubs to the Dodgers. On Wednesday, there were initial reports the Dodgers were cutting ties, but now it’s clear they simply intend to send him to the minor leagues for a little while, in theory to get him “straightened out.” Marmol,...

The Chicago Cubs today acquired pitcher Matt Guerrier from the LA Dodgers in exchange for local punchline Carlos Marmol. Yes, somebody actually gave up something for Carlos Marmol. I’m laughing as hard at the Dodgers as you are. Carlos Marmol was perhaps the worst closer ever in Cubs history; and this is a franchise with a history of bad closers.
Los Angeles also acquired something...
