Another Cubs Blog:
I?ve you?ve been buying Bill James? annual for a few years you?ve noticed a section called Manager?s Record. Some of you may recall that we discussed this in last year (Part 1 and Part 2). Lou was pretty close to average in most categories in 2007 with the exception of pinch runners used (well above average), long outings by starters (well above average) and relievers used on consecutive days (well below average). He was also below average in using the platoon advantage to his favor in 2007. What did we find in 2008?
Lou used 112 lineups. League average was 114. League average is National League only as there are some significant differences in managing the two leagues.
Lou employed the platoon advantage at .47 (based on lineup at the start of the game). League average was .57. It appears Lou doesn?t care too much about using the platoon advantage to his benefit or it could be that he hasn?t had the players to do so. Prior to managing the Cubs, Lou was a little above average here so he?s either changed his philosophy or, as already said, hasn?t had the players he?s wanted to use to take advantage of the platoon splits. He does now so we?ll see in 2009. Bruce Bochy led NL managers last year and he did so again in 2008.
the first number below is the number of times Lou did that and the number in parentheses is the NL average.
286 pinch hitters (282)
22 pinch runners (26)
31 defensive substitutions (35)
42 quick hooks (43)
37 slow hooks (42)
27 long outings (20)
111 relievers used on consecutive days (118)
3 long saves (3)
121 stolen bases attempted (127)
93 sacrifice attempts (92)
98 runners moving (100)
15 pitch outs (22)
45 intentional walks (49)
28 ?Good? IBBs (30)
17 ?not good? IBBs (18)
9 IBB?s ?bombed? (8)
