Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Named NL Player of the Week
Joe Rondone/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK

Validating the Diamondbacks’ decision to re-sign him last offseason, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. kicked off the year by being named NL Player of the Week.

Gurriel Jr. posted an impressive .471 batting average in the D-backs opening series against the Rockies. He also set an Arizona franchise record with 10 RBIs, the most through the first four games of a season.

In each of the first three games, Gurriel Jr. hammered a home run.

On the American League side of things, Juan Soto with the New York Yankees was named Player of the Week. Soto led the Yankees to a four-game sweep over the Astros with some outstanding plays in the outfield plus a .529 batting average.

Soto and Gurriel Jr. will find themselves on opposing sides of the field this week as the Yankees take on the Diamondbacks in a three-game series at Chase Field, beginning on Monday.
