It's getting to the point now where it's safe to say that Derek Lowe is saving the Indians' rotation. Without Lowe, the Indians' spotty rotation would be an even bigger mess than it already is.

Tuesday, in his best start of the season, and his best start in several seasons, Lowe pitched a six-hit shutout over Minnesota in leading the Indians to a 5-0 victory.

It was Lowe's first complete game in four years, and it improved his record to 6-1.

Lowe has a 2.05 ERA, which is easily the best of any pitcher in the Indians' rotation. The Indians acquired Lowe in an off-season trade with Atlanta. Cleveland gave up a minor league pitcher in the deal, which is turning out to be a major steal for the Central Division-leading Indians.

With Justin Masterson and Ubaldo Jimenez off to terrible starts, Masterson is 1-3 with a 5.40 ERA and Jimenez is 3-3 with a 5.18 ERA, the burden has fallen to Lowe and youngster Jeanmar Gomez to keep the rotation afloat in the early part of the season.

That's exactly what Lowe has done. Making it even more remarkable is the fact that Lowe is 38 years old. He led the National League in losses last year while going 9-17 for Atlanta.

There were some who wondered if the end of his career was near.

The Indians took a flyer on Lowe, aided considerably by the willingness of the Braves to pay $10 million of Lowe's $15 million salary. The Indians have benefited financially and artistically as a result of the trade.

Tuesday in Minnesota Lowe looked like a pitcher closer to his prime than the twilight of his career. And it couldn't have come at a better time for the Indians.
