Yesterday the New York Mets issued a press release announcing that Lucas Duda would undergo wrist surgery to repair a fractured right wrist.  According to the team: Photo by Michael G. Baron The New York Mets today announced outfielder Lucas Duda underwent surgery yesterday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan to repair a fracture in his right wrist. The procedure was performed by Dr. Andrew Weiland, the Mets’ hand specialist. The fracture occurred while Duda was moving furniture last month at his apartment in Southern California. Duda will be discharged from HSS today and is expected to be ready for Spring Training in February.” The 26-year-old former USC Trojan struggled for the Mets last season in what many hoped would be a breakout campaign.  Duda batted just .239 and hit only 15 homers in just over 400 at-bats in 2012. If Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love can break his hand doing push-ups then I shouldn’t be surprised to see Lucas Duda fracture a wrist moving furniture.  Freak accidents happen and of course, like everyone else, I hope Duda can get healthy as quickly as possible.  I’m not completely sold on Duda as an everyday player for the Mets unless it were at first base, but that would mean New York would need to move Ike Davis.  According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, that was a move that the team apparently toyed with but is now even more unlikely to occur: The freak injury to Lucas Duda, the Mets‘ backup plan at first base, should put the kibosh on any thought about trading the Mets’ young power-hitting first baseman now. The Mets seemed to be considering a trade for Davis before Duda’s injury. Photo by Michael G. Baron While one high-ranking Mets official very cautiously said Duda’s injury “potentially’ could mean Davis comes completely off the trade market, it’s hard to imagine the Mets leaving themselves with a first base question next spring by trading Davis now. Said another Mets person: “It’s hard to trade Ike, period.” Duda, the potential Davis replacement, had wrist surgery after breaking his right wrist he said was broken moving furniture. The team said they expect him to be ready to play at the start of next season. Moving Davis seems imprudent now. He hit 32 home runs with 90 RBI and a .227 batting average. His OPS jumped in the second half to .888 after an awful first half.” I’m much more comfortable with the team moving forward with Ike Davis manning first base than I would be with Duda, but changes have to be made and it makes sense that Davis, who actually has value on the trade market, would be a player that the team discussed moving.  With that shelved it’s on to other options, none of which I hope include trading David Wright, Jon Niese or R.A. Dickey but given their value, those are the chips we are likely to hear being discussed this offseason and beyond.
