The Boston Red Sox released first basemen Lyle Overbay on Tuesday morning. Overbay, 36, had been hoping to win a roster spot with the Red Sox after signing a minor league deal in late January.
While Overbay did not make the Red Sox there are other teams that the left handed hitter could sign with before the season starts.
The Yankees and Brewers both figure to be interested in Overbay. New York will begin the season without a handful of players including first basemen Mark Teixeria. Milwaukee will start the year without their first basemen as well and are currently planning to use Alex Gonzalez at the position.
Had Overbay not been granted his release from the Red Sox he could have opted out himself or taken a minor league assignment which would have paid him $100,000.
Overbay had 41 at-bats this spring for the Red Sox but compiled just a .220/.327/.341 line.
