AP Magglio Ordonez was never one to call attention to himself over his 15-year Major League Baseball career despite putting up a .309 career batting average with 294 career dingers and 1,236 RBIs.  He often shied away from reporters whenever possible. After his retirement from baseball in 2011, Ordonez returned home to his native Venezuela. On Tuesday, Bloomberg-BusinessWeek reported that Ordonez will be putting himself in the spotlight as he is running for mayor in Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela.  The city is an oil town roughly 180 miles from his native Caracas.  Nicolas Maduro, Venezuela’s president, tried too hard to make a baseball analogy in his statement Tuesday. “We invite our major leaguer, Magglio Ordonez, to hit a grand slam in Puerto La Cruz.” Ordonez played for the Tigers from 2005-11.  His best season came in 2007 when he won the batting title with a .363 average to go along with 28 home runs and 139 RBIs. He will run for the socialist party, which is odd because he wasn’t very social when he played. Thanks, I’ll show myself out. [Free Press]
