LAKELAND, Fla. Although locating a hard and lively fastball is the ticket the majors, the slider often determines how successful a pitcher becomes and if he stays at that level. The slider put Max Scherzer over the top, and it's the pitch Rick Porcello needs to command consistently in order to become a rotation mainstay. The slider provides Al Alburquerque the opportunity to become something special, and it's the pitch that helped make Justin Verlander borderline illegal. What makes it a put-away pitch? Its so hard to pick up the spin on it and differentiate it from the fastball, Tigers pitching coach Jeff Jones said. It comes in looking like a fastball, then it changes its plane, going down and across. Most guys fastballs are in the 90s (mph), while most guys sliders are 84 to 87 (mph). Its a hard pitch that has late movement. Scherzer explained why it's harder to pick up than a curveball. The flight path a curve takes is entirely different from a fastball, Sche...

Detroit Tigers: 3 Up and 3 Down

2012 was a year of joy, torment, success, and embarrassment all wrapped into one odd little package for the Detroit Tigers. Overall, the team made it to the World Series, which is a huge accomplishment and a great revenue generator for the franchise. Losing in lackluster fashion via sweep at the hands of the Giants was a black eye on the season. The Tigers needed nearly the full...

Detroit Tigers Positional Preview: Five Key Players to Watch As Spring Training Unfolds

Might Nick Castellanos make the opening day roster? Only if he’ll see plenty of playing time. A few weeks ago, we analyzed the five most important Detroit Tigers’ pitchers to watch during spring training. This week, we’re taking a look at positional players. In the infield, things are set with Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder and Omar Infante. In the outfield there’s a bit...

Tigers' Dotel sorry for calling out Cabrera

LAKELAND, Fla. Octavio Dotel said he apologized to Miguel Cabrera and his teammates as a group on Wednesday morning for published comments that Dotel believes were misinterpreted. "You have to step up and say something," Dotel told by Eric Adelson of Yahoo! Sports. "Miggy's more about his game. I don't see him as a leader." I asked Dotel if that was...

Octavio Dotel Says Miguel Cabrera Is Not a Leader, Cares More About His Own Game

The Tigers won the AL pennant off the bat of Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera, but that wasn’t enough for one of his teammates. Reliever Octavio Dotel says Cabrera is not a leader in the clubhouse. Dotel prodded the 2012 MVP to call a meeting multiple times during the playoffs, and Cabrera declined. “You have to step up and say something,” Dotel told Yahoo! Sports. “Miggy’s...

Octavio Dotel apologizes for questioning Miguel Cabrera’s leadership

Four months ago, Detroit Tigers reliever Octavio Dotel called out teammate Miguel Cabrera for not speaking to the media after a loss in the playoffs. In Dotel’s opinion, Cabrera should be one of Detroit’s leaders since he is the team’s best player. On Tuesday, the topic was revisited. In a story written by Eric Aldeson of Yahoo! Sports, Dotel was quoted as basically calling...

Potent Tigers lineup could join 900 Club

LAKELAND, Fla. When a team has a second baseman who batted .333 in the World Series batting ninth, thats a pretty good lineup. And when you have a career middle-of-the-order batter hitting second, that simply expands the middle of the order. Having Omar Infante that low and Torii Hunter that high gives Detroit the makings of its first 900-run team since the 1934-37 Tigers did it...

Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander turned 30 on Wednesday, hopes to be pitiching for the Tigers into his 40s. “I have a long time left,” Verlander said via the Associated Press. “I don’t even look at it as reaching the halfway mark. I’ve got a lot of pitches left in me, and I don’t know what it’s like to be 30 since I haven’t done that yet.” Verlander, the 2006...

Another generation of Fielders on deck

LAKELAND, Fla. Just like their father, Jadyn and Haven Fielder love baseball. They wear his No. 28 on their junior-sized Detroit Tigers uniforms and are constantly playing pickup games or catch on any patch of vacant grass they can find at Marchant Stadium or the TigerTown complex. Sometimes they accompany their father, Prince, to batting practice to watch him swat balls into...

Verlander at 30 on same pace as Glavine

LAKELAND, Fla. Justin Verlander turns 30 on Wednesday, but it's just another birthday to the Tigers ace. I dont care about stuff like that, Verlander said. It doesnt really matter to me. However, there's something related to turning 30 that did interest Verlander. He's won 124 games at that relatively early age and aspires to be enshrined in Cooperstown someday. ...
