You know what? I'm tired of being negative about this off-season. I still don't think that things are going to play out terribly well for the Pirates this winter, but I also don't think I've done a good job of making it clear that I don't think the Pirates are breaking up the 1927 Yankees again. Ronny Cedeno and Ryan Doumit and Paul Maholm and Garrett Jones (should he be non-tendered) are all replaceable. They're not All-Stars. They might be the best the Pirates can do for 2012, but doesn't just thinking that make you feel dirty? I hope the Pirates can do better. So let's sit down and think of ways Neal Huntington might be able to improve this team this winter, because otherwise, it's going to be an awful and negative off-season. Of all of the places the Pirates need to find help at this winter, I'm least certain what they're going to do at first base. They could keep Garrett Jones and platoon him with someone like Matt Hague. They could t...

Pirates Sign Six Minor League Free Agents

The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed six minor league free agents, according to Baseball America.  Returning to the organization are catchers Milver Reyes and Wyatt Toregas.  Reyes was a coach last year, and will likely return to the same role.  Toregas will probably fill the role once again as AAA depth and an emergency catcher if the Pirates happen to need a dozen catchers again...

Cuban prospect a YouTube sensation

Really bizarre stuff swept the baseball sector of the internet yesterday. There’s this Cuban phenom named Yoenis Cespedes. He’s a 26 year old outfielder that is ready to become an MLB free agent and take his talents to the U.S. Cespedes is “arguably the best all-around player to come out of Cuba in a generation,” according to Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus. He...

Pittsburgh Pirates: Alex Presley to Break OF Pattern?

Happy offseason.  Every now and then, I find something written about the Pirates by one of my friends that’s so good that a shout-out here is in order.  I have a buddy from California named Brett who, despite having the former World Champion San Francisco Giants in his backyard, is loyal to the black-and-gold to the point that he once made a cross-country pilgrimage to PNC Park...

Steve Pearce Elects Free Agency

Baseball America reports that Steve Pearce has elected minor league free agency.  Pearce was the only player eligible for minor league free agency that we hadn’t heard about yet, with the other players already electing free agency.  The Pirates outrighted Pearce to AAA after the season, and because he had at least six years of pro experience, he was able to opt for free agency...

Pirates Have a Visit Scheduled With Cespedes

Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus reports (via MLBTR) that the Pittsburgh Pirates will be one of the teams who will be scheduling a visit with Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes in the coming weeks.  We heard on Monday that the Pirates were one of the teams who attended the workouts of Cespedes. The article by Goldstein also features some quotes from Edgar Mercedes, the advisor...

AFL Recap 11/9: Two Hits For Holt

The Mesa Solar Sox beat Salt River 8-4 today.  Brock Holt was the only Pirates prospect who played in the game.  He went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI, while stealing his third base of the year.  Holt now has a .263/.440/.263 line in 19 at-bats, with three stolen bases in four attempts.

Pirates Caravan info

The Pirates posted details for their annual offseason caravan, which will take place much earlier than usual this year (like PirateFest). The caravan features several groups of players and coaches traveling around the region for a week doing autograph sessions, visits to schools, etc.  On the weekend, they convene in Pittsburgh for PirateFest. This year the caravan will visit Uniontown...

Making a big move

Now that I've run through the various positions that the Pirates need to upgrade this winter and ways they might go about doing so (if you missed the individual pieces: starting pitching, shortstop, catcher, first base), let's take a step back and look at the team as a whole. This is a tall task facing Neal Huntington this winter. The Pirates have problems attracting decent...

How can the Pirates be creative?

This Date in Pirates History: November 8

On this date in 1920, Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Wally Westlake was born. He played for the Pirates from 1947-51. He was signed as an amateur free agent by the Dodgers in 1940 and spent his first three seasons in the minors. He missed the 1943-45 seasons due to military service, returning in 1946 when he played AAA ball in Oakland and hit .315 in 136 games. The Pirates traded...

News and notes

Some Bucs news and notes as you recover from a rough football weekend in Pittsburgh… We have our first Clint Barmes rumor. As I kind of implied in the post investigating shortstop options, he would be my prediction if I had to make one. The Bucs added Rick Sofield – an old acquaintance of Clint Hurdle – to their minor league staff.  A few days ago there was a report of Jamie...
