The Yankees top prospect, Manny Banuelos, was never expected to contribute much in the Bronx this summer, but lately they haven’t even had the opportunity to make that decision as he has been on the shelf with an elbow injury since mid-May.
It’s an elbow injury, but the Yankees have downplayed its significance and don’t expect him to need Tommy John Surgery. Still, he is going to miss at least another month before he returns to action, Brian Cashman told Evan Drellich of MLB.com.
This is significant because Banuelos still needs more seasoning in the minors before he is even considered for the Bronx. The longer he’s on the shelf now the longer it will take him to reach the majors.
Banuelos was known for impeccable control down in the minors, but then he added some velocity a couple of years ago and hasn’t been quite the same since. Early this season he seemed to have gotten the control back, but the injury kept him from showing consistency with it, something the Yankees will likely insist he do before calling him up.
Hopefully it’s not too much longer. No matter what he isn’t a likely candidate for this season, but in order for him to make the team next year, he’s going to have to pitch again in the minors at some point this year.
