March Madness means the college basketball tournament, and we here at IBI are hosting our first annual IBI March Madness bracket challenge. If you haven’t gotten your bracket in, make sure you sign up! To the winner goes the spoils, as a year’s subscription, a 2013 prospect book and four free tickets go out to the winner. There are other prizes as well for second and third. There’s nothing like a little swag for being the luckiest smartest bracketologist here at IBI. March Madness also means that spring training is winding up, and for the Indians, it means that the final battles are being waged for the final spots on the team’s roster. From here at the Corner of Carnegie and Ontario, it appears as though the 25-man is wrapped up. While there may still be some business involving an overbooked pen and a Carlos Carrasco-burning-suspension-move, the roster should look something like this: C: Carlos Santana, Lou Marson 1B: Nick Swisher 2B: Jason Kipnis 3B: Lonnie Chisenhal...

Spring Training Notebook: Roster takes shape

There’s less than a week and a half left until the Cleveland Indians open up the 2013 regular season, and it seems as if almost all the puzzle pieces have come together. It was a busy week for the Indians as the team announced a handful of roster decisions. A number of the previous Spring Training position races now seem to be clear, and we should have a pretty good idea as to...

MLB News: Matsuzaka to accept minor league assignment

Yesterday came word that the Indians had informed Matt Capps and Daisuke Matsuzaka that they would not be making the opening day roster. Now, Paul Hoynes is reporting that Dice-K will accept his role in the minors for the Indians- “I have told the Indians that my intentions are to stay in the organization,” said Matsuzaka, 32. Matsuzaka said he came to that decision based on...

Cleveland Indians Top 20 Prospects

The Indians acquired a high profile prospect this off-season to go with a couple successful drafts. The system isn’t the strongest in baseball, but they are making strides in the right direction. Note: Avg ranking takes the average of any site I could find that had team rankings (sum of ranks divided by total sites). Comp ranking is the composite for the organization; it basically...

2013 Minor League Spring Game Recap: March 19th

Tuesday was a camp day at Indians minor league camp which meant a short workout in the morning followed by two five innings games pitting AAA vs AA and A+ vs A. Left fielder Jorge Martinez had the big blow of the day with a towering two-run homer to right center, but several others such as Anthony Gallas, Tyler Naquin, Tony Wolters, Ronny Rodriguez, Francisco Mejia and many more...

Indians option RHP Bauer to Triple-A Columbus

The Cleveland Indians have optioned right-hander Trevor Bauer and two other pitchers to Triple-A Columbus. Bauer was the overall No. 3 pick by Arizona in the 2011 draft. He was sent to the Indians in the offseason as part of a three-team trade. Known for his quirky training regimen, Bauer had a rough outing for the Indians on Wednesday, allowing four runs on five hits in three...

Indians option Carrasco to Triple-A

The Cleveland Indians have optioned right-hander Carlos Carrasco to Triple-A Columbus and recalled pitcher T.J. House from the same minor league club. The 23-year-old House is poised to make his major league debut, and he couldn't be more excited. Before Monday's game against the Orioles, House said when he learned of the promotion, ''It kind of floored me a little...

2013 Goodyear Notebook: March 20th

It was another busy day at the complex on Wednesday as Tony bounced back and forth between the Reds and Indians' complex to see all four Indians' affiliates in action and see a ton of players. In today's update he has some comments from the front office on the likes of Joe Sever, Tyler Booth, Tony Wolters and others, and also provides some insight into things he saw and...

Spring Training Game #26: LA Angels 6, Indians 5

Cabrera really is in shape as compared to the past two springs. It’s clear that he’s been working hard since last season to stay in game shape. I know I’ve talked about stamina issues with his extensive play through the winter leagues and beyond, but I don’t believe that will be an issue going forward. It’s not like players haven’t been playing year-round for years...

Pitchers ready to step up for revamped Indians

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Ubaldo Jimenez understands reality, about himself and about the Cleveland baseball team. The Indians generated a ton of optimism this offseason by bringing in free agents and adding parts -- including a World Series manager. But a good part of an important group left basically unchanged was the starting rotation. That would be the rotation that a year ago was...

Indians 5, Diamondbacks 4

Carlos Carrasco had a so-so day in his push for the fifth spot in the Cleveland Indians' rotation. The competition dwindled to two players - Carrasco and Scott Kazmir - after the Indians' sent Trevor Bauer and Corey Kluber to Triple-A Columbus on Thursday morning. That afternoon, Carrasco gave up four runs on eight hits in the Indians' 5-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks...

Asdrubal Cabrera vs Ian Desmond - Who Would You Rather Have?

With statistics this close over the last 3 seasons, it is hard to argue who is more valuable, Asdrubal Cabrera or Ian Desmond.  But when looking at the average draft position, you might want to wait a bit on the SS position and land Cabrera in the new look Indians offense.  Unless your league values stolen bases above normal, which Desmond has the advantage, there is nothing Desmond...

2013 Baseball Preview: Cleveland Indians

Over the 2011 and 2012 seasons, no team spent more days in first place in the American League Central than the Cleveland Indians. Getting there was...

Spring Training Game #27: Indians 5, Diamondbacks 4

Thursday’s game was one of the last opportunities for Carlos Carrasco to make a case for the role of fifth starter. Scott Kazmir appears to have the job sewn up, but a lot can happen in two weeks. Terry Francona has been extremely up-front with his belief that things like position battles always tend to “work themselves out.” He clearly has been alluding to the potential...

Spring Training Week 4 Recap

Moving into the last two weeks of Spring Training (3/14-3/21), things are sorting themselves out. B games have started, allowing more players to play more innings and starting pitchers are pitching through the fifth inning. The World Baseball Classic is over (congratulations to the Dominican Republic) and massive cuts have occurred, making the actual lineups of Spring Training games...
