Yankees closer Mariano Rivera was carted off the field today, after he injured his right knee chasing down fly balls during BP at Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium. Apparently, Rivera does this every single day, and according the The Herald’s Steve Buckley, he nags manager Joe Girardi on a regular basis about letting him get some playing time in the outfield.
This is rich people. This is absolutely hilarious. You don’t like to see injuries in sports, but when a player who is so important to his team is allowed to participate in things that have absolutely nothing to do with their role on the team, and he gets hurt doing it, I feel no sympathy. As much of a mess as the Red Sox have been to this point, the Yankees aren’t fairing much better, sitting just 2.5 games ahead of Boston, in 4th place in the AL East. I’m sure the late George Steinbrenner would already have his foot up Girardi’s ass for allowing this to happen.
