The world this week lost a true rock icon with the death of Chris  Cornell. The Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman -- not to mention accomplished solo artist -- was found dead in his hotel room in Detroit late Wednesday night following a concert in a death that is being ruled a  suicide.

Cornell was a Seattle native and a huge fan of the city’s sports teams. To mourn his passing, the Seattle Mariners held a moment of silence at Safeco Field on Thursday night before a 5-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

Greg Greene, filling in as Safeco Field’s DJ Thursday night, fittingly opted for an all-Cornell soundtrack for the game.

Seattle’s Space Needle also went dark for one hour on Thursday night to mourn the death of the city’s native son.

The Detroit Tigers, in the town where Cornell died, paid tribute to the late musician in its media notes.

Cornell was 52 years old.
