M’s land versatile infielder Looking to build some infield depth, the Seattle Mariners have acquired Robert Andino from the Baltimore Orioles for outfielder Trayvon Robinson. With a surplus of outfielders, and a lack of depth in the middle infield, this is a trade purely for depths sake. In his career, Andino has played second, third, shortstop, left and centerfield. The M’s have acquired Robert Andino from the O’s. (Photo: Jonathan Daniel / Getty Images) Andino is a career .235/.296/.323 hitter spanning eight seasons in the Bigs. This past season, he posted a .588 OPS with 7 home runs and 5 stolen bases. Robinson hit .221/.294/.324 with 3 home runs and 6 stolen bases in 46 games with the M’s in 2012. While Andino provides defensive depth, his glove isn’t exactly golden. He owns a career 2.4 UZR. His best positions are second and short, with an average UZR of 1.4 between the two. My initial reaction is that the M’s gave up too much in this trade. Robinson is a 25-year old with plenty of potential to be a viable power and speed threat. It would have been interesting to see how his game changed with the fences being moved. While Andino provides Seattle with depth, he lacks any standout tools. In terms of the depth chart, this is a good move for Seattle. But in terms of trading a potential 25-year old leadoff man for a 28-year old utility player, it could have been done better.
