Seattle Mariners fans were wondering what would become of their favorite pitcher, Felix Hernandez. If the news that is spreading around the world of baseball is true, then King Felix will be getting a five year contract extension worth $135.5 million. The earlier reports of a seven year deal worth around $175 million were false. The Mariners website has not confirmed any deal between the team and Hernandez. Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik told The Associated Press that he was not going to comment on the reports of Hernandez’s possible new deal with the team.  Even if the deal does not go through Hernandez will be making a little over $19 million this year and $20 million the year after. Felix has only played for Seattle in his career in the big leagues. He won the AL Cy Young Award in 2010. Last season he had an ERA of 3.06, 223 strikeouts, a 1.14 WHIP and had a record of 13-9. Plus he also pitched a perfect game last year. Sources close to the Mariners say that the deal should be complete before pitchers and catchers report to spring training. Mariners pitchers and catchers will be at training camp next Tuesday in Peoria, Arizona. Anytime there is a new contract out there for a high profile pitcher, people including a player’s agent look at the highest paid players at that position. Last December the Dodgers signed Zack Greinke to a six-year, $147 million contract. The Yankees currently pay CC Sabathia $161 million for seven years, so these two contracts were probably noted by Hernandez’s agent. We will see in a few days how much the Mariners spent to keep King Felix in Seattle.
