NASHVILLE Seattle was one of the suitors when Justin Upton was available at the 2010 winter meetings, and it appears the Mariners interest has not waned. The D-backs and Mariners met Monday night, sources with knowledge of the D-backs said, with Upton the major piece in discussion. Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik has made it clear that ace right-hander Felix Hernandez is not on the market, but everyone else in a deep Marinerssystem could be available. With shortstop on their mind, the D-backs appear to be interested in former No. 1 draft pick Nick Franklin as a piece of a multi-player return package. The Mariners have some quality minor league pitching prospects in Taijuan Walker, Danny Hultzen and James Paxton, but that also is a strength of the D-backs system. The D-backs also have had plenty of dialogue regarding left fielder Jason Kubel, who is attractive to teams looking for outfielders because of his offensive production and his team-friendly contract. Kubel had 30 home runs and 90 RBI in his first season with the D-backs in 2012, and he is owed only 7.5 million in 2013. He also has a 7.5 team million option with a 1 million buyout for 2014. D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said at this postseason briefing that the D-backs would like to get more athletic, and moving Kubel would free Gerardo Parra to be the everyday left fielder. Zduriencik told the Seattle media on Monday that he would trade prospects if it meant upgrading the major league roster. "If you can look at a scenario where you take a weakness and make it a strength, that's something you have to entertain," Zduriencik said. "I don't have a desire to trade these guys. I'd be tickled pink to continue this plan and let them all become big leaguers for us and see what they're going to be. But you can't shut the door on an opportunity to improve your club for the short term and the long term. Franklin, who played in the Arizona Fall League this winter, was a 2009 first-round pick out of high school whose career has been stunted by unusual circumstances. He missed time in 2011 with a concussion after a teammates bat struck him during batting practice, and he later contracted mononucleosis. He has above-average power for a middle infielder, scouts say, and hit seven homers in 64 games at Class AAA Tacoma last season, his first stint in Triple-A. Walker was a sandwich pick in 2010 and played in the 2102 Futures Game. He was 7-10 with a 4.69 ERA last year while pitching in Double A as a 19-year-old. Hultzen was the second player taken in the 2011 draft, one pick before Trevor Bauer. He was 9-7 with a 3.05 ERA while splitting time between Double A and Triple A. Follow Jack Magruder on Twitter

Justin Upton Rumors: Mariners, Rangers, Indians Show “Active Interest”

The Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers and Cleveland Indians have all shown “active interest” in Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton, reports Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. Three-team Upton trade not close to completion

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Arizona Diamondbacks, Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers worked on a potential three-team trade throughout most of the day Wednesday. However, a major league source with direct knowledge of the talks told The Sports Xchange that a deal is unlikely to get done before the Winter Meetings end Thursday morning at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Resort. "...

Pursuit of Upton driving blockbuster talks

Texas badly wants Justin Upton, according to major-league sources. Arizona, seeking a shortstop, is focused on Asdrubal Cabrera. The goals of those two clubs are driving talk of three- and four-team blockbusters at the winter meetings - and also might shed light on what is happening with the two biggest free agents, right-hander Zack Greinke and outfielder Josh Hamilton. The Rangers...

Phillies, D-Backs Discussing Upton-for-Lee Swap

Pedro Gomez of ESPN is reporting the Phillies and Diamondbacks have begun engaging in preliminary talks to send Cliff Lee and cash to the Diamondbacks for outfielder Justin Upton. More on this as it develops.

Phillies, Diamondbacks talking about a Justin Upton-Cliff Lee swap?

We have a new, crazy rumor in relation to Justin Upton. The Phillies and Diamondbacks are reportedly discussing a swap that would send Upton to the Phillies for oft-traded starting pitcher Cliff Lee (and likely, a giant pile of cash as well). The prevailing logic is that the Diamondbacks would then move Lee to another team in exchange for the shortstop they desire. Other sources...

Upton remains in play, but it's complicated

NASHVILLE Kevin Towers may have started a trend when he united Oakland and Florida in the three-team trade Oct. 20 that brought Heath Bell to the Diamondbacks, got cash relief for the Marlins and sent Chris Young to the As. Multi is the new normal. How many trade balls are in the air? Right now? Towers said late Tuesday afternoon. Probably more than I have hands. But I have...

Could DBacks trade Kubel and keep Upton?

Much of the offseason trade speculation involving the Arizona Diamondbacks has centered on right fielder Justin Upton. But sources told FOXSports.com late Monday that the team has had at least as much trade dialogue in recent days about outfielder Jason Kubel. Kubel spent his entire career in the American League until signing with the Diamondbacks before this season, and he would...

Justin Upton Blockbuster Trade Update

The Texas Rangers' GM Jon Daniels seems to be the "driving force" behind the potential four-team blockbuster that was first rumored yesterday.  It would appear, the Rangers, the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Cleveland Indians, and the Seattle Mariners are the four teams involved in talks.  A deal like this would be a difficult one to pull off, but because of Seattle&...

Report: Lee-for-Upton Trade Dicsussed?

PHOTO: AP Update, 4:59 pm: D’Backs beat reporter Nick Piecoro chimed in just after the initial wave and reports that the trade talks are “off base.” ——————- According to a tweet Pedro Gomez of ESPN, the Phillies and Diamondbacks are discussing a Justin Upton for Cliff Lee swap. However, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports writes Arizona is not actively seeking this deal...

2012 Baseball Winter Meetings Day #3: It’s the little deals that matter most

Josh Hamilton, Zack Greinke, and Justin Upton are three pieces of three monster deals that could be on verge of either getting done at any moment, or fall apart at the last minute.  That’s all fine and dandy, but there are plenty of other players, serviceable players that are available that no one talks about.  Look at Randy Choate for example. According to Jon Morosi’s...

No deals yet, but Towers making the rounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Justin Upton might have been the most discussed Diamondback on the internet and in the winding Opryland hotel hallways as the winter meetings officially opened Monday, but he was not the most popular D-back in trade discussions, general manager Kevin Towers said. Who was? Towers would notto go there. Trevor Bauer? Gerardo Parra? It is not fair to speculate, and...

MLB Winter Meetings Day 4 Live Blog: Four Team Blockbuster in Works Revolving Around Justin Upton

8 a.m. ET: Day 3 of the MLB winter meetings were a little slower than Day 2, especially in Boston, but that just means we could be seeing a busier Day 5. Already in the works is a four-team trade that would send Justin Upton to the Rangers — meaning Texas would not re-sign their star outfielder Josh Hamilton — according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. The fourth team seems to...
