North of the Border

September 11-13

After being swept the Mariners (67-74) retreat North and take on the Blue Jays (64-75) who just  finished sweeping the Red Sox.

The M’s just need one more victory to surpass their winning record from last season.

Pitching match ups: Game 142: RHP – Erasmo Ramirez vs. RHP – Brandon Marrow

Matchup | Preview

Ramirez gets a chance to make a comeback to the starting rotation after losing his spot following an elbow injury in late June.  He was recently recalled from Triple-A Tacoma and pitched a scoreless inning of relief against the Oakland Athletics last Friday

Ramirez has a 4 pitch inventory that he draws from: Fastball, Slider, Curveball and Changeup.

Although 64.9% of the time it will be the fastball that gets picked.  Hitters seem to have a hard time picking up his pitches as they are hitting just .229 against the M’s rookie.

* Current Line: 0-2 / 3.69 ERA / 7 BB / 27 SO / 1.07 WHIP

The Mariners up and coming star Ramirez will go against a former Mariner great: Brandon Morrow.  Morrow has good numbers this season but missed over 2 months with an oblique injury.  Morrow is 1-1 in three starts since returning.

The M’s face Morrow in April where he pitched 6 innings of scoreless ball.

But that was a different team back then, right?

* Current Line: 8-5 / 2.94 ERA / 29 BB / 85 SO / 1.05 WHIP

Game 142: RHP – Kevin Millwood vs. LHP – Rickey Romero

Looks like the fans will have to suffer through another Millwood start.  It seems to be obvious to everyone except Eric Wedge that Millwood’s career is over.  His last start against Boston was only his 5th win of the season.

The way Boston is playing right now – I think my grandma could have thrown a perfect game against them.

And she is dead.

Millwood’s last start against Toronto was a loss – I know you are surprised at that.

* Current line: 5-12 / 4.27 ERA / 55 BB / 104 SO / 1.42 WHIP

Romero had a rough outing in his last start.  So rough in fact his next start was pushed back until he could face an easier opponent on longer rest. That is insulting.

The M’s have struggled against left handed pitching, but I believe that they can pull together and win this one, even with Millwood on the mound.

Game 142: RHP – Erasmo Ramirez vs. RHP – Brandon Marrow

* Current Line:  8-13 / 5.85 ERA / 90 BB / 110 SO / 1.59 WHIP

Game 143:  RHP – Felix Hernandez vs. RHP – Henderson Alverez

I hope it is a happy Felix day as the last one wasn’t so happy.  Felix is a tough competitor and is likely to be more than ready to take on the Blue Jays in one of their most disappointing seasons to date.

The numbers are all in his favor – The current Blue Jays have only a .190 Average against the Seattle ace.

* Current Line: 13-7 / 2.67 ERA / 49 BB / 195 SO / 1.08 WHIP

Alverez is listed as having a triceps injury, but is still expected to make this start against the Mariners.  This is likely to do with his impressive number against Seattle this season.  But to find those numbers you have to go all the way back to April 29th.

Alverez pitched through 6 innings and allowed only 1 run on 6 hits gaining his first win on the season.  However since then his numbers have not looked very impressive at all.

Advantage: Seattle.

* Current Line: 8-12 / 4.95  ERA / 48 BB /  60 SO / 1.48 WHIP

M’s vs. Blue Jays Series Predictions

Game 1:  Sorry Ramirez – I want to believe you can win this one.  Prove me wrong

Prediction:  Loss (Jays 4 – M’s 2)

Game 2: It goes against my instincts to think that Millwood can win, but what is life without risk?

Prediction: Win (Jays 3 – M’s 6)

Game 3: No question.  Felix hands down.

Prediction: Win (Jays 2 – M’s 3)

Blue Jays OF Rajai Davis has 41 steals, second in the majors behind the Angels’ Mike Trout. Davis’ career high for steals is 50 in 2010 for Oakland.

Mariners C Jesus Montero is batting .400 (12-for-30) during an eight-game hitting streak.

Toronto INF Edwin Encarnacion needs three RBIs for the first 100-RBI campaign of his career. He has three homers and seven RBIs in six games against Seattle this season.
