M’s and A’s go 11, Walk Off Bomb Seals the Deal

The Headline: The Seattle Mariners lose in humiliating fashion as they fail to score a run after the first inning and Oakland walks off in 11.

Where: O.co Colliseum, Oakland
Temperature: 66 degrees
Umpires: Home — Tim Tschida, 1B — Bill Welke, 2B — Jeff Nelson, 3B — Chris Guccione
Attendance: 10,819

Love ‘em

1. Kevin Millwood

Don’t let the score fool you. Oakland’s offense had just as hard a time tonight as Seattle’s, and it’s all because of starting pitcher Kevin Millwood.

Coming off a string of disappointing starts, Millwood had a great rebound night. The right hander was masterful through 7 innings—on just 93 pitches—striking out 7 and allowing just 3 hits.

He allowed no runs in the no decision.

2. Carlos Peguero

Making his 2012 debut in right field tonight was Carlos Peguero. The 25 year old started his year the same ole way: destroying minor league pitching.

Before being called up, Peguero had a 1.002 OPS at AAA Tacoma. He registered 1 hit in his 4 at bats tonight.

Pegeuro has been described by many as a AAAA player—too good for the minors, not good enough for sustainable major league success. Just remember M’s fans, they used to say the same thing about Texas Rangers slugger Nelson Cruz.

3. Yoenis Cespedes

My contempt for Cespedes is well documented.

Oakland’s rookie outfielder has teed off on Seattle’s pitching all season long, posting a .667 slugging percentage in 10 games against the Mariners. In that sample he’s hit 5 home runs.

Well, Cespedes was 0-4 tonight with 1 walk and four men left on base. So, I of course have to take the time to rub it in that for once our pitchers fooled him.

Hate ‘em

1. Different Lineup, Same Results

As is the ongoing trend with these “love ‘em/hate ‘ems” I must make a note that Seattle’s lineup was absolutely horrendous tonight.

The boys were held to just 7 hits in 11 innings of play. They failed to score a run past the first inning, only getting more than one man on base in one more inning throughout the night.

There’s so much potential here, when’s it going to shine through?

2. Charlie NO!

As the season has progressed, Charlie Furbush has become a favorite of mine. Whether it’s pitching 2 innings, or 0.2, the hard throwing left gets the job done.

Unfortunately, Furbush proved mortal tonight. After going the entire month of June without an earned run—in fact his 0.00 ERA run began May 17—the scoreless streak finally came to an end.

Furbush pitched 0.2 innings tonight, giving up a double and single which ultimately lead to his sole earned run.

3. The Way it all Ends

Like I said before, the score is very misleading.

This was an incredibly boring game. The M’s had nothing on offense after the first, and the A’s were just as bad.

Then, just like that, bottom of the 11th, two men on, and Chris Carter wallops a fat one for the walk off homer. I’ve been known to exaggerate, but I’m pretty sure I could have hit a home run off that offering from Steve Delabar.

In a game that left everyone snoring, it’s Oakland that gets to take the final bow.

NoteBook

Seattle catcher Jesus Montero (concussion) wasn’t in the lineup Friday but won’t be going on the seven-day concussion disabled list because of the upcoming All-Star break.

The Athletics won for the first time in three attempts against the Mariners in Oakland this season.

Kyle Seager has recorded 34 of his 49 RBIs on the road. Milone is 5-1 in seven home starts.
