Guillermo Quiroz can relate to what his fellow Venezuelan countryman, Jesus Montero, is going through this spring. It was eight years ago, while with Toronto, that Quiroz -- a journeyman pro who played a handful of games for the Mariners in 2006, 2009 and 2010 and is back in camp on a minor league deal -- arrived at spring training as a much-heralded catcher of the future. Quiroz had put up some big minor league numbers at the plate in 2003, hitting 20 homers and 27 doubles in Class AA, posting an on-base-plus-slugging percentage of .889 and playing in 2003 Futures Game. He was rated baseball's third-best catching prospect and 35th best prospect overall by Baseball America at the time. Upon arriving in camp in Dunedin, Fla. in 2004, he came under plenty of scrutiny on a team desperately thin for quality catching. And like Montero, he also had plenty to learn about the art of catching at the big league level. "The most important thing you have to do is build a relationship...

Seattle Mariners outfield predictions for 2012

M’s Need Angels in the outfield The Seattle Mariners have been without a true left fielder since Raul Ibanez went off to greener pastures.  Milton Bradley had the potential to bring a power bat in that position, but when that didn’t happen his .964 fielding percentage combined with his off the field antics were not worth the price tag and he was designated for assignment. Michael...

A winning season from these guys would be a fantasy… It’s that time of year, folks. Fantasy baseball season is upon us. All the fantasy freaks are frothing at the mouth to pre-rank their teams and find out what position they draft in. Being a Seattle Mariners fan, I always look at the roster and see who has the best prospects of actually helping you put together a competitive...

Ichiro Third And Figgins First: The Right Move For The New Seattle Mariners?

The big storyline that is brewing around our youth oriented Seattle Mariners this Spring Training has to do with our aging veterans; Ichiro and Figgins. First, Manager Eric Wedge has decided that Ichiro will be our number three hitter for this season.  I’m a little torn on this decision.  I have been arguing (with friends and family) that Ichiro should be our number three hitter...

A New Spring Brings New Hopes

It is strange in some ways to leave my sons and long-time home in New York City  yet feel like I am arriving home when I land in Seattle. My wife and I got in last night to attend the Starlight Foundation’s Oscar Night fundraising event tomorrow. On-deck: Tuesday getting to Peoria, AZ and Mariners spring training. What a great time of the year! I’m already buzzed having read...

Training camp update

Veteran Carlos Guillen, who has a long history of leg ailments, has a tight calf and has been taking treatment the past few days rather than stay on the field. He won’t play in today’s intrasquad but may be able to re-take the field today or Monday. Trayvon Robinson, whose tight legs have kept him from running the past three days, ran for trainers Saturday. He’s close to being...

Lots of offense seen in Mariners intra-squad affair

Another Mariners intra-squad game has come and gone, this one won 7-3 by Team 2 after it fell behind 2-0 early on. Plenty of extra-base hits today, beginning with the Franklin Gutierrez solo homer to left off Felix Hernandez at the very start of the game. That's as many home runs as Gutierrez had all of last season. Dustin Ackley hit a two-run homer off Josh Kinney in the fifth...

Theyu just put out the list of pitchers throwing in tomorrow's intrasquad game and Hisashi Iwakuma tops the list of Team 1. MLB Preview 2012: Seattle Mariners

Heading into 2011, Mariners fans had tempered expectations. They won just 61 games in 2010, and most expected similar results in 2011. In that regards, the Mariners didn’t disappoint, winning just 67 games. The biggest issue in Seattle was the league’s worst offense, for the second year in a row. The pitching was solid and is also a strength of the farm system. Knowing these...

Yankees 2011/2012 offseason review

The Yankees went into this offseason without a lot of holes in the roster. The entire lineup was expected to return, except for Jorge Posada who was expected to be replaced by Jesus Montero. Of course Montero got traded. After all, the Yankees had a few free agents, none of them were major though, and most of them were re-signed. The only real task they had this offseason was...
