The Yankees knew they were signing a longshot when they picked up the oft-injured Mark Prior this offseason and that’s exactly what they’ve gotten. He’s missed nearly the entire season with a back and groin strain, but has finally returned to action this week as he pitched in the Gulf Coast League on Friday. “It felt really good,” Prior, who tossed nine strikes in the 16-pitch outing, which lasted one inning, told Chris Girandola of MLB.com. “The velocity is there. So is the arm strength. But the biggest part is the drive with the hip, where there’s no problem. My back feels fine, my hip feels good. It’s good to get out there.” At this point there is no reason to believe that Prior will ever actually pitch for the Yankees. He is on the mound right now though which is obviously the first step so perhaps there is a small chance he can get his act together for long enough to earn a September call-up.
