Anibal Sanchez was dominant in his spring debut, striking out four in two scoreless innings and leading the Miami Marlins to a 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday. The right-hander, whose debut had been pushed back due to soreness in the back side of his right shoulder, allowed two hits. Jeremy Hellickson, making his second spring start - and third appearance - gave up four runs on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts in three innings. A scary moment occurred in the top of the fourth inning when Rays outfielders B.J. Upton and Desmond Jennings collided chasing a flyball by Austin Kearns. It was ruled an inside-the-park home run, and the speedy outfielders were carted off the field. Both Upton and Jennings told reporters they are OK.

Marlins had Gaby Sanchez throw baseballs at new aquarium to test its durability

Those of you who have had a chance to view pictures or video of the Marlins new amusement park stadium know that there is a lot going on there. Most notably, the Miami ballpark features an obnoxious structure in center field that will whirl and twirl when someone from the home team hits a homer. The park also boasts 40 feet of aquariums where a backstop should be. As expected, the...

Jeremy Hellickson and Re-Defining BABIP

There aren’t many mainstream writers out there that are willing to tackle sabermetric concepts with players, so I have to give Marc Topkin from the the Tampa Bay Times a tip of the hat for mentioning BABIP to Jeremy Hellickson. Not only did he mention a sabermetric statistic to a player, but he brought one up that makes Hellickson look bad: “Yea, I just got lucky on the mound...

Marlins 3, Mets 1

Jose Reyes stepped into the on-deck circle, turned toward the New York Mets' dugout and bowed. Hard feelings, nowhere to be found. The Miami Marlins shortstop faced his former team for the first time Thursday, shaking hands and offering hugs before the game with guys donning the orange-and-blue color scheme he used to wear. Reyes signed a $106 million, six-year deal with the...
