Donovan Solano had three hits, including a two-run double, and the Miami bullpen combined for 4 2-3 hitless innings to lead the Marlins to a 6-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night. Christian Yelich drove in three runs with a double and single for the Marlins who have won three straight after losing six in a row. Brian Bogusevic hit a solo homer for the Cubs who dropped to 27-44 at the so-called Friendly Confines of Wrigley Field. Miami starter Tom Koehler pitched 4 1-3 innings, allowing two runs and four hits. He was pulled with bases loaded in the fifth, but was picked up by the Miami bullpen, which retired the next 11 batters. Ryan Webb (2-5) pitched two perfect innings for the win. Edwin Jackson (7-15) only made it through five innings for Chicago, allowing three runs and seven hits. Since pitching a season-high eight innings while beating Milwaukee 6-1 on July 31, Jackson is 0-4, allowing 22 runs over 33 2-3 innings in six starts. The right-hander matched his car...

August rewind: Fernandez hot, but Marlins hitters stifled

The Miami Marlins' summer storyline remained consistent despite a change on the calendar from July to August. The Marlins produced adequate pitching and weak hitting for the second straight month to go 8-20 in August, when they lost their last six games overall and 10 of the final 11. A young pitching staff wasn't quite as stellar as during July (3.24), but still produced...

Hope for the Hopeless: Miami Marlins

This is the second edition of Hope for the Hopeless, where we will take a look at the first ten teams in the league eliminated from playoff contention, and examine what their fans can be optimistic about after a disappointing 2013 season. Next up: the Miami Marlins It's fun to kick a team while they're down, especially when that team has one of the most reviled owners...

Rookie Watch: Fernandez leads, others make Gold Glove cases

In the race for the National League Rookie of the Year, Jose Fernandez has seemingly distanced himself from the pack. The Marlins' All-Star right-hander has only gotten better as the season wears on, going from a 4.50 ERA in April to 1.15 in August. But in a duel with Miami's young gun Friday at Turner Field, the Braves' Julio Teheran continued to make quite the case...

Cubs prospects: A Josh Vitters’ resurgence in 2014?

Today, we finish our 2013 features of Chicago Cubs prospects with two apiece from the AA Tennessee Smokies and the AAA Iowa Cubs.  Tennessee finished its regular season 76-62 and claimed the second half North Division title of the Southern League.  Iowa missed the postseason after finishing with a record of 66-78.  Let’s get to our player profiles. Tennessee Smokies: Yeiper...

Alvarez goes deep, sends Marlins to win over Cubs

Venezuelan native Henderson Alvarez uses a translator for his postgame interviews but this question he understood. Asked whether the tight right hamstring that forced him out of Monday's game after six innings resulted from an earlier home run trot Alvarez chuckled in denial. Despite the premature exit Alvarez had what manager Mike Redmond termed "a heck of a day."...

Cubs would do well to give Scott Baker September innings

For Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Scott Baker, the 2013 season has not produced much promise. After missing all of 2012 due to Tommy John surgery, Baker and the Cubs had anticipated that he pitch in Wrigley Field by this year's All-Star break. That obviously did not happen. Baker may not pitch at all in 2013 either even though the rosters have expanded for the September stretch...

Murphy's two-run HR gives Cubs 9-7 win over Marlins

Donnie Murphy hit the go-ahead two-run homer while Dioner Navarro homered and drove in three runs as host Chicago salvaged the finale of a three-game set against Miami. The Cubs trailed by three runs entering the bottom of the seventh before Navarro singled home two runs and Murphy greeted Ryan Webb (2-6) with the decisive blast to left. Starlin Castro added a run-scoring double...

Cubs hit 4 HRs, power past Marlins 9-7 to avoid sweep

CHICAGO (AP) -- Donnie Murphy homered to cap a four-run rally in the seventh inning and the Chicago Cubs connected four times Wednesday to beat the Miami Marlins 9-7. Murphy's two-run shot put the Cubs ahead 8-7. Starlin Castro, Dioner Navarro and Ryan Sweeney each added solo home runs for Chicago. The Cubs avoided a sweep and prevented the Marlins from winning four straight...

Illini QB Aaron Bailey: a new favorite Illinois football topic

The talk from Illini Nation around QB Aaron Bailey reminds me of the talk from Chicago Cubs Nation surrounding Javier Baez. Or Albert Almora. Or (insert another Cubs blue chip Minor League prospect’s name here). It’s the same sentiment- accepting that losing, and extreme losing at that, is inevitable in the present. Therefore, instead look to the future and focus on the can...

Theo Epstein Reunites With His Former Reliever Daniel Bard

(Photo/CSSNE) The Chicago Cubs have claimed Daniel Bard off waivers from the Boston Red Sox. To make room for the reliever, outfielder Cole Gillespie has been designated for assignment by the Cubs. Bard will be reunited with his former General Manager and current Chicago Cubs President Theo Epstein from their time together with the Red Sox organization. The former top...
