Miami Marlins top prospect Christian Yelich was a hit in Sunday's Futures Game at Citi Field. Make that two hits. Yelich went 2 for 2 as the USAs designated hitter against a team of international prospects. Before being removed for a pinch hitter in the sixth, he delivered the games first run with an RBI double to center field in the second and then singled in the fourth in a game the U.S. won 4-2. The 21-year-old outfielder is hitting .257 with six homers and 28 RBI in 44 games with Double-A Jacksonville in a season in which he has made two trips to the disabled list. Yelich began the season on the DL with plantar fasciitis, then was sidelined in June with a small abdominal wall strain. Yelich started the season at Jacksonville after being the Marlins' best hitter during spring training. His promotion to Miami figured to happen around the middle of this month until the injuries hit. "Has it interrupted the timeline? Yes," Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest said on Friday. "But, Christian is back playing in Double-A. He's going to play in the Futures Game. He feels fine. Now, it's just a matter of ramping him back up in Double-A and getting his timing back." Yelich and Marlins ace Jose Fernandez both played in last years Futures Game at Kansas City. Fernandez will be Miamis representative at Tuesday nights All-Star Game. The Futures Game, which started in 1999, pits a team of minor league U.S. prospects against a team of international prospects. It marks the beginning of festivities for the major league All-Star break. Charlie McCarthy can be reached at mac1763@bellsouth.net or on Twitter @mccarthy_chas.
