MIAMI Ozzie Guillen knew it could be coming. On Tuesday, it did. Guillen was fired after just one season as manager of the Miami Marlins. It was a season that started with Guillen telling Time magazine I love Fidel Castro, and one that ended with the Marlins finishing in last place in the NL East at 69-93. After careful consideration following the disappointment of the 2012 season, we decided to dismiss Ozzie, Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest said in a statement. Our managerial search begins immediately and our hope is that a new manager, along with roster improvements, will restore a winning culture. During the waning days of the season, Guillen said he was hopeful he would return as manager. But he was aware of the possibility he could be fired despite having three years left on his contract. "Why?" Guillen said. "Look at yourself in the mirror and say why. You're in last place. But Guillens comments about Castro might have caused just as much damage. Many Cuban-Americans in Miami were outraged, and Guillen received a five-game suspension. The Marlins will be looking for their fifth manager in three seasons. Since 2010, theyve had Fredi Gonzalez, Edwin Rodriquez, Jack McKeon and Guillen. Guillen, who will be owed about 7.5 million for the final three years on his contract, has a nine-year managerial record of 678-617. He was manager the previous eight seasons for the Chicago White Sox, winning the World Series in 2005.
