The Arizona Diamondbacks are trying to keep in contention in the NL West. If Giancarlo Stanton hadn't spent a month on the disabled list, the Miami Marlins might be in better position than they are now in the East. The Diamondbacks will try to bounce back Tuesday night following an ugly loss to Stanton and the Marlins. Arizona returned home after completing a 4-2 road trip with a weekend sweep of Houston. However, the Diamondbacks (62-60) lost 12-3 on Monday to fall five games off the pace in both the division and wild-card races. Stanton homered twice and drove in four runs for Miami (56-67), which has won four of six. Stanton, who also homered in three consecutive games at Colorado over the weekend, is batting .313 with seven homers, four doubles and 15 RBIs in 13 games since returning from the disabled list following surgery to remove loose bodies from his right knee. His 26 home runs on the season rank third in the NL. "This guy is so good, so talented," Miam...

Marlins take on D-backs in doubleheader

It's almost fitting that the Arizona Diamondbacks will play the franchise's first doubleheader in Phoenix on a day severe thunderstorms are expected to hit the valley. The inclement weather, however, has nothing to do with the twinbill at the retractable-roof ballpark. The Diamondbacks are hopeful Wednesday's day-night doubleheader goes a bit better than their first...

D-backs turn to Skaggs for Wednesday start

PHOENIX The Diamondbacks' future is now. Again. Left-hander Tyler Skaggs will become the third Diamondbacks' top pitching prospect to arrive in the present Wednesday. Skaggs, who has posted strong numbers at two minor league stops this year, is to make his major league debut in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday against Miami, the D-backs announced Tuesday. He...

Tyler Skaggs delivers in major league debut

PHOENIX If first starts mean anything, Tyler Skaggs deserves an immediate second. He was that poised and that effective in his major league debut Wednesday afternoon. On his first day in the major leagues, Skaggs was almost exactly the pitcher the Diamondbacks projected him to be when they acquired him in the Dan Haren trade in July 2010. Skaggs gave up three hits, the only damage...

Reyes back to normal with strong 2nd half

New team. New stadium. New contract. Newfound publicity that included being on the cover of Sports Illustrated. It didnt immediately translate into Jose Reyes looking like his old self. The Marlins shortstop, who won the NL batting title with a .337 average last season for the New York Mets, was hitting a meager .226 on May 8. At the All-Star break, he was doing better, but still...

Marlins drop first game of doubleheader

PHOENIX (AP) -- Tyler Skaggs allowed three hits through 6 2-3 innings in his major league debut, pitching Arizona to a 3-2 victory over the Miami Marlins Wednesday in the opener of the first home doubleheader in Diamondbacks history. The 21-year-old left-hander gave up a two-run homer to Justin Ruggiano in the second, then shut down the Marlins on one hit the rest of his outing...

Highly touted Turner to make MLB debut for Marlins

The Marlins will call up highly-regarded pitching prospect Jacob Turner to start one of Wednesday's double-header games. His performance will help dictate whether he spends the rest of the season with Miami or goes back to the minors. "We are still debating what way are going to go," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "I think we should keep him here to see if we can...

D-backs host doubleheader for first time

It's almost fitting that the Arizona Diamondbacks will play the franchise's first doubleheader in Phoenix on a day severe thunderstorms are expected to hit the valley. The inclement weather, however, has nothing to do with the twinbill at the retractable-roof ballpark. The Diamondbacks are hopeful Wednesday's day-night doubleheader goes a bit better than their first...

Drew's time with D-backs comes to an end

PHOENIX -- All but certain to lose the best shortstop in franchise history, Stephen Drew, to free agency over the winter, the Diamondbacks did what they could to replenish the position by trading Drew to Oakland for Class A shortstop Sean Jamieson after Mondays game. Drew will be reunited with former D-backs manager Bob Melvin in Oakland and will be even more involved in a pennant...

Marlins open series against Diamondbacks

After taking full advantage of one struggling team to close out their road trip, the Arizona Diamondbacks will face another to start a 10-game homestand. The Diamondbacks look to match a season high with a fifth straight victory Monday night in the opener of a four-game set against the Miami Marlins. Arizona (62-59) outscored Houston 23-6 in a weekend sweep as it seeks its third...

Explaining the Drew trade

It’s not all that surprising that Diamondbacks shortstop Stephen Drew passed through the entire NL and got through to the Athletics on waivers, leading to his trade to Oakland on Monday night. Drew not only is owed nearly $2 million for the rest of the season, but also was batting only .193 with a .601 OPS in 155 plate appearances after missing nearly a year due to a fractured...

Despite long absence, Marlins' Stanton still could win home run title

Miami Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton has 26 home runs, tied for third in the National League with Arizona's Jason Kubel behind Ryan Braun (33) and Carlos Beltran (28). Stanton is on pace to finish with 34 home runs, which would match his career high, set last year in 150 games. But manager Ozzie Guillen said Stanton has a shot to win the National League home run title...
