All it took was a stadium built mostly at taxpayers' expense, a quick name change and new uniforms to get the Miami Marlins to open up the pocketbook for some elite free agents. Reports have surfaced that the Marlins have made contract offers to three free agents: 1B Albert Pujols, SS Jose Reyes, and P Mark Buehrle. All three visited Miami last week and toured the new stadium and got the hard sell from owner Jeffrey Loria and president David Samson, among others. Fox Sports reported Friday that the Marlins have made "substantial" offers to Reyes and Pujols. Reyes visited Miami on Wednesday, eating lunch with Loria at Joe's Stone Crab and touring the stadium. Pujols did the same on Friday. Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman tweeted later Friday that the Marlins put in a bid on Buehrle as well, but that none of the three deals were at all close to happening. Buehrle, too, had a tour of the stadium. Just because the Marlins made offers does not mean any of the three ...

Pujols gets contract offer from Marlins

MIAMI (AP) A surprising visit by Albert Pujols sent a message: The Miami Marlins will be a much different franchise than the Florida Marlins. Pujols picked an unlikely locale to begin his free-agent tour Friday when he was courted in Miami by the Marlins, only hours before they officially changed their name during a ceremony at their new ballpark. Pujols had lunch with team officials...

Reyes more likely than Pujols

MIAMI — Albert Pujols came, saw the sparkling new ballpark, and left South Florida on Friday night impressed with the direction the Miami Marlins are headed. Before Pujols went home, the Marlins presented the slugger with a preliminary contract offer. Although the Marlins confirmed Pujols’ visit, they are not commenting on whether they’ve made contract offers. According...

Could Pujols' Destination Eventually Impact Votto's?

Could Albert Pujols' offseason moves eventually affect the career path of Joey Votto? According to this opinionated article written by Adam Hughes of Yahoo!, the answer is yes. While he does bring up some valid and interesting points in the piece, I'm not so sure the two superstar's fates are so intertwined. It's a no-brainer that Votto's future contract...

Nolan Ryan: No long-term deal for Pujols, Fielder

Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols are the top prizes in this current group of MLB free agents, and both would fit nicely at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. But the power hitting first basemen will come at an extremely high price, possibly in the seven years, 200 million-range. While either would be a tremendous offensive upgrade, Rangers president and CEO Nolan Ryan said Thursday...

Boras says markets different for Fielder, Pujols

Scott Boras is already making his case for Prince Fielder over Albert Pujols. As baseball's general managers got set to begin meetings, Boras pointed out Monday that his client, Fielder, is four years younger than Pujols and so the market for the two free agents will be different. The slugging first basemen are the biggest power-hitting prizes available. Fielder helped the...
