Florida Marlins closer Leo Nunez had been playing under an assumed name, the Miami Herald reported.
According to the report, Nunez has been suspended by the Marlins and placed on baseball's restricted list. He has returned to his native Dominican Republic and is not expected to pitch again this season.
The Herald reported that Nunez has known of the issue since July. The Associated Press reported that Nunez's real name is Juan Carlos Oviedo and is 29, one year older than Nunez is listed by the team.
Nunez has 36 saves, seventh in the National League. He is eligible for arbitration this offseason.
