Marlins president runs 52.4 miles for charities

Associated Press  |  Last updated April 27, 2012
Miami Marlins president David Samson ran the equivalent of two marathons on Friday in his ''Run to Honor the Workers,'' raising over $550,000 for 10 different charities. Samson began the 52.4-mile run in Pompano Beach at 7 a.m. and concluded inside the stadium at 6:40 p.m. prior to the Marlins' game against the Arizona Diamondbacks to raise funds in honor of the construction workers who built Marlins Park. ''I didn't realize how long two marathons was, it's just long,'' Samson said. Samson, whose previous longest run was 30 miles, ran the first marathon in 5 hours, 20 minutes and the second in 6 hours, 20 minutes with occasional stops. The run consisted of nine five-mile intervals and one 7.4 interval, each dedicated to a different charity. A different runner from a specific charity joined Samson during each interval. ''I'm not a running guy, but I think the cause of the run is very great,'' Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said. ''Samson and the Marlins do a lot of charity things and it's a very special day for them.'' Upon conclusion of his run, the 44-year old Samson met with each charity and posed for photos while clearly laboring. He was then hooked up to four IV bags. ''I feel alright,'' Samson said. ''My throat hurts like crazy, I'm hot, I've got blood everywhere, but other than that I feel good. I feel happy to raise all of this money. I feel happy that the workers got their wall today, happy they're enjoying the game, and happy that I get to go to sleep.'' While Samson is looking forward to resting, he has a busy Saturday in store as he plans on attending his son's baseball game, the Miami Heat playoff game against the New York Knicks, and the Marlins' game. ''There's no recovery,'' he said. The charities involved were: Jewish Federation of Broward County, Stand Up To Cancer, Challenged Athletes Foundation, ALS Recovery Fund, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, The Miami Foundation, Miami Children's Hospital, University of Miami Multiple Sclerosis Center of Excellence, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, and Liga Contra el Cancer. ''We are still getting donations,'' Samson said. ''People are just reacting well because the charities are so personal.''
