For the first time in ten days, the Miami Marlins picked up a victory with a 5-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.    It had been a rough stretch for the Marlins that was chock full of issues with the offense.      While four runs is hardly an offensive explosion, the Marlins did hit two homeruns and had a number of good at-bats against a talented Rays’ team.

Josh Johnson made his next to last start of the Spring and went five innings.  It was the longest the ace had lasted on the mound thus far but Johnson did not have his best stuff.    An uncharacteristically high five batters reached base via walk while three more picked up hits.   Johnson managed to not allow any runs to score and also struck out four along the way.    Edward Mujica allowed his first run of the Spring in his only inning of work.    Beau Jones, Rob Delaney and Chad Gaudin pitched the final three innings with each having a scoreless frame.

The outfield battle heated up in this game with Bryan Petersen crushing a two run shot, his first homerun of the Spring.     Aaron Rowand went 2-4 with a run batted in for his best game of a rough Spring as the non-roster invitee remains on the outside looking in.   Interestingly,  Rowand played all three outfield spots in the game proving his value with versatility should he win a role.   Petersen offers the same versatility however with improved defense at each position as well.   Chris Coghlan came in late and went 1-2 as he continues to try and take an outfield spot to start the year.  John Buck also homered in the game, the second of the Spring for the Marlins’ catcher.   Johnson had a double that nearly left the ballpark off Rays’ starter Wade Davis.    Hanley Ramirez’s impressive Spring continued as well with a 2-4 day including a double.

The Marlins will take on the Detroit Tigers on Monday as their two day roadtrip continues.   Scheduled to start for Miami is Mark Buehrle while Detroit will send Rick Porcello to the hill.
