The Marlins will shut down rookie right-hander Jose Fernandez after two more starts reports MLB.com's Joe Frisaro. Furthermore he will not be allowed to throw more than 12 total innings so unless Fernandez gets knocked out of a game early look for him to go six innings in each of the two remaining starts. Fernandez 21 has thrown 158 2/3 innings across 26 starts this season. Another dozen innings will get him to 170 2/3 after throwing 134 innings across two levels of Single-A ball last summer. Fernandez was a first round draft pick out of high school in 2011 and this is only his second full pro season. “That was the range as an organization that we felt comfortable leaving him around 150-170 depending on how many starts he did” said manager Mike Redmond to Frisaro. “It was kind of the unknown at the beginning of the season how he would do and how he would perform. We were looking at ways to protect him based on how many innings he had gone before. That's the number we came ...

Marlins will shut Jose Fernandez down after two more starts

After a sensational start to the rookie's career, the Miami Marlins are preparing to shut down Jose Fernandez.  The team is trying to be as cautious as possible with the 21-year old sensation.  Miami doesn't have much current Major League talent, so they must protect their youth. According to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com, the Marlins intend to let Fernandez pitch no more...

ATLANTA (AP) -- Miami rookie Jose Fernandez probably has two more starts before he'll be shut down, and the Marlins are adjusting his schedule to make sure those are home games. Marlins manager Mike Redmond said Saturday the team will hold firm to a 170-innings limit for the phenom. He has thrown 158 2-3 innings. The right-hander is 10-6 and ranks third in the National League...

Fernandez shines but Marlins fall to Braves 2-1

Mike Redmond usually appreciates the spark Jose Fernandez brings to the Miami Marlins. The manager found an exception: Watching his enthusiastic young star pitcher slide head-first into third base with a triple. Fernandez gave up only three hits in another strong start but couldn't overcome Freddie Freeman's two-run homer in the first inning, and the Marlins lost to the...

August rewind: Fernandez hot, but Marlins hitters stifled

The Miami Marlins' summer storyline remained consistent despite a change on the calendar from July to August. The Marlins produced adequate pitching and weak hitting for the second straight month to go 8-20 in August, when they lost their last six games overall and 10 of the final 11. A young pitching staff wasn't quite as stellar as during July (3.24), but still produced...

Braves’ Teheran wins duel with Marlins’ Fernandez

When Elliot Johnson doubled and Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer before the second out of the first inning Friday night Braves fans might have wondered what all the fuss was about over Marlins rookie Jose Fernandez. Fernandez settled in and gave everyone a good idea why he’s a frontrunner for NL Rookie of the Year. But Atlanta’s own top rookie Julio Teheran won the pitching...

Ed Lucas had a two-run single and Mathis added a two-run double in the Marlins' five-run third inning. Eovaldi (3-5) halted Miami's skid and his personal...

Slumping Marlins fall to Braves 5-4 in 11 innings

Justin Ruggiano said every mistake seems to become more difficult to overcome as the Marlins' latest losing streak grows. Miami blew an early two-run lead and fell to the Atlanta Braves 5-4 on Saturday night as B.J. Upton had four hits, including the game-winning single in the 11th inning off Ryan Webb. The Marlins, in last place in the NL East, have lost six straight. The...
