Ken Rosenthal first reported Monday that the Rays were in heavy pursuit of shortstop Yunel Escobar. Several reports Tuesday evening, including CBS Sports’ Danny Knobler, have confirmed the team has acquired Escobar from Miami in exchange for a top infield prospect. Miami initially acquired Yunel Escobar from the Toronto Blue Jays in their blockbuster trade a few weeks back. While in Toronto, the veteran shortstop hit .253 in 2012 but carries a career batting average of .282. He has a 2013 price tag of $5 million with team options for the same amount in 2014 and 2015. In return, the Rays send infield prospect Derek Dietrich. Dietrich is ranked the 13th prospect according to Baseball America rankings. He hit .273 in single-A and double-A in 2012. Tampa Bay drafted Dietrich in the second round of the 2010 draft. The acquisition of Escobar makes a lot of sense for the Rays. It gives them an everyday shortstop with a club friendly contract. Also gives them the option of keeping Ben Zobrist in the outfield more often as opposed to playing shortstop. And with the return of Ryan Roberts at second base, the Rays could have a more solid middle of the infield in 2013. Something we haven’t seen since Jason Bartlett and Akinori “Aki” Iwamura UPDATE The team has made the trade official: Prospect Dietrich to the Marlins in exchange for Escobar.
