The Miami Marlins took advantage of an error by the Kansas City Royals to score the go-ahead runs in the seventh inning Wednesday then turned to their bullpen to wrap up a 5-2 victory. The Royals were leading 2-1 when Koyie Hill doubled off reliever Tim Collins (2-6) to start the seventh. Christian Yelich then hit a grounder toward third that utility man Elliot Johnson let through his legs putting runners on second and third with nobody out. Donovan Solano and Logan Morrison followed with RBI groundouts to give the Marlins the lead. That was enough for the Marlins bullpen. Dan Jennings (2-3) got through the sixth A.J. Ramos worked the seventh and eighth and Steve Cishek handled the ninth for his 26th save. Cishek struck out Alex Gordon with runners on first and second to end the game. Solano and Morrison each finished with a pair of RBIs for Miami. Justin Ruggiano went 3 for 4 and drove in a run ending his franchise-worst 0-for-42 skid with his single in the second. The Royals...

“Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?” Giancarlo Stanton

Going into the 2012 season, Stanton was expected to be the focal point and franchise player of an All-Star Marlins team. Heading into 2013, Stanton was essentially the only recognizable name remaining on the Marlins after the blockbuster trade with the Blue Jays. On the 45-73 Marlins, Stanton often finds himself sandwiched in between “All-World” players Adeiny Hechevarria and...

George Kottaras is Much Better Than You May Think

I’m going to say something which may ruffle some feathers. Salvador Perez is a little overrated. But I’m going to follow that up with something that hopefully will win everyone back, George Kottaras is very, very underrated. He’s also the best back-up catcher in baseball and is as much the reason The Royals are on this hot streak as anyone else on the team. The praise for...

Giancarlo Stanton reduces bat to kindling with powerful swing (photo)

Despite being a member of a terrible team over the last few seasons, Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton still has managed to put up some decent power numbers during his career. In 2011 and 2012, Stanton mashed 34 and 37 homers, respectively. And while his home run totals have taken a bit of dip this […]The post Giancarlo Stanton reduces bat to kindling with powerful swing...

Preview: Santana, Royals seek series victory over Marlins

As dazzling as the pitching staff has been in the Miami Marlins' wins this month, it has been fairly awful in the defeats. Jacob Turner's road struggles may mean the club is headed for more of the latter. After the Marlins got another victory via shutout, Turner looks for the first road win of his career in the finale of a three-game series with the Kansas City Royals on...

Royals designate Johnson for assignment to clear room for Bonifacio

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Less than 24 hours after infielder Elliot Johnson made a crucial error that allowed two unearned runs in a 5-2 loss to the Marlins, the Royals designated him for assignment, thus removing him from the 40-man roster. The Royals now have 10 days to either trade or release Johnson, who is out of minor league options. If Johnson were to clear waivers, the Royals...

Marlins could be in market for Abreu

The Marlins already feature an All-Star pitcher and a slick-fielding shortstop who were born in Cuba. Perhaps the organization is prime to turn to a Cuban slugger on the international free agent market. Jose Dariel Abreu a power-hitting first baseman is reportedly in Haiti after defecting from the Cuban national team. Another report suggests the Marlins will make a big push for...

Flanagan: Chen's magnificence wasted in loss

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- There's almost no explaining the incredible run Royals left-hander Bruce Chen is on. Chen was brilliant again Tuesday night, throwing seven shutout innings. And now his ERA is 0.93 through six starts since returning to the rotation. Unfortunately, the Royals offense again let him down, coming up with zilch in a rather discouraging 1-0 loss in 10 innings to...

Grieving Davis returns to stop the Marlins

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Royals right-hander Wade Davis wasn't sure how he'd feel once he returned to the mound after being away from the team for over a week. Davis was away on bereavement leave, grieving the loss of his stepbrother, Dustin Huguley, 25, who passed away unexpectedly Aug. 3 in Florida. Davis did not speak of his personal loss, though manager Ned Yost had indicated...

Preview: Hot-hitting Butler leads Royals against Marlins

Billy Butler is one of the main reasons behind the Kansas City Royals' impressive turnaround. Bruce Chen is making his own contributions on the mound. Butler looks to continue his tear at the plate and Chen goes for another strong start as the Royals again attempt to capitalize on the struggling Miami Marlins on Tuesday night. Winning 17 of 20 has made Kansas City (62-54)...

Moustakas in a walking boot as precaution

Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas left Monday’s game early with tightness in his left calf and hasn’t played since. This morning he was seen walking around with a boot but the team has said that was just a precaution to relieve pressure. I’m kind of skeptical about that as Ned Yost has said Moustakas won’t play till this weekend and even that’s just a possibility...

Which Royals team will show up against Detroit?

It was a matter of time before the Kansas City Royals would lose a series after the All-Star break. And I’m not surprised it was against the lowly Miami Marlins. That’s the way baseball works. But even a team like the Marlins win games if their opponents can’t score runs, commit costly errors or give up key hits. Losing the series to the Marlins hasn’t finished the Royals...

Miami Marlins, looking even more desperate, are now selling $1 tickets

In its latest desperate attempt to sell tickets, the Miami Marlins are promoting $1 passes to their Aug. 20 game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Preview: Guthrie takes the ball as Royals pay a visit to the Tigers

While the Detroit Tigers own a comfortable lead in the AL Central, they have a chance to really distance themselves from one of the teams in pursuit.Detroit tries to extend its season-high home winning streak to 10 on Thursday night when it opens a five-game set against the Kansas City Royals. The Tigers (70-49) had dropped three straight and four of five before bouncing back with...

Giants-Marlins Preview

The San Francisco Giants and Miami Marlins can partially attribute their disappointing seasons to struggling offenses that have scored fewer runs than any other in the NL. Chad Gaudin and especially Miami starter Nathan Eovaldi are plenty familiar with their team's scoring woes. Eovaldi hasn't received any run support in his last five starts, and he'll oppose Gaudin...

Royals’ roll continues in 6-2 victory over Marlins

And now the Royals are eight games over .500 and they got there Monday night in a 6-2 victory over the Miami Marlins by overcoming some rare defensive bobbles through stout pitching and a balanced 12-hit attack. They also got there without All-Star left fielder Alex Gordon who missed a game to attend the birth of his second son and despite another addition to a growing injury list...
