Miami Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton didn't miss a beat in his first series back since the middle of the month. Stanton has home runs in two of his last three games after missing the previous nine games because of a strained muscle in his left side. Stanton, who homered off Cliff Lee on Friday and Roy Halladay on Saturday, has 36 home runs, the second-highest total in franchise history (Gary Sheffield had 42 in 1996). He went 1-for-4 with a single Sunday in Miami's 4-1 loss to the Phillies. Stanton on Saturday was named the team MVP by the Miami chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Stanton has missed 39 games because of injuries, including knee surgery in July. "A lot of people ask: If this kid stayed healthy all year long, what (can he do)? If he's still healthy, where (would) this team would be?" manager Ozzie Guillen said. "But missing all that time and rehab and surgery, to come up and have the year he has had i...

Marlins giving Greenberg a second chance

MIAMI Its the ultimate second chance. Adam Greenberg stepped to the plate at Sun Life Stadium on July 9, 2005, for his first major-league at-bat. Appearing as a pinch-hitter for the Chicago Cubs, Greenberg was hit in the head by then Marlins reliever Valerio de los Santos with the first pitch and went down in a heap. Though my head was split open, I never truly lost consciousness...

Truck Full of FIsh Crashes Into Building Named After Marlins Owner

South Park once said, "If irony were strawberries, we'd all be drinking a lot of smoothies right now." A truck delivering fish crashed into the Loria Center, named for Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria, on Monday morning. No one was injured. Perfect. Just perfect. Utter perfection. Its only fitting that after a disastrous Marlins season, a truck full of fish its a building...

The Phils are finally eliminated as they lose to the Marlins in walk-off fashion, 2-1. The Phils overcomes an early Marlins’ lead to end up beating the fish, 9-5. The Marlins took a quick 2-0 lead in the first as, with the bases loaded, via singles by Bryan Petersen and Donovan Solano, with Petersen stopping at second base, and a walk to Jose Reyes, and with nobody out, Giancarlo Stanton hits a two-run single, knocking in Petersen and Solano, while sending Reyes...

Edwin Rodriguez, Vic Darchinyan And Antonin Decarie Victorious In Connecticut

Edwin Rodriguez, Vic Darchinyan and Antonin Decarie were the winners in tonight's prospect-themed HBO Boxing After Dark triple-header from Connecticut. Though not typical HBO fare, the three fights proved interesting, if not evenly matched.(Vic Darchinyan, left, laying into Luis Del Valle; photo credit: Ed Mullholand, HBO) In the main event, Edwin Rodriguez (22-0) beat up on...

Reality check on Edwin Rodriguez

After his thumping TKO8 victory over a 13-0-1 Jason Escalera this weekend, Edwin Rodriguez has become the darling of boxing blogs and columns. Capturing plenty of press, Rodriguez called out Kelly Pavlik, and suggested if he didn't get the Pavlik fight, he might move up to light heavyweight and seek out Jean Pascal. Both of these statements gave me a case of the "...

Undefeated Edwin "La Bomba" Rodriguez (22-0, 15 KOs) made a major statement tonight in the main event on HBO Boxing After Dark, punishing a tough, previously unbeaten Jason "Monstruo" Escalera (13-1-1, 12 KOs) until referee Steve Smoger called off the fight at the start of the eighth round, from the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket...

3 punch combo: Darchinyan’s big win, Rodriguez vs. Pavlik & more on Deontay Wilder

In this week's three punch combo I will begin by once again taking a critical look at Deontay Wilder's career development, after the news of his turning down a bout with Bryant Jennings.  Next, we will look at how the latter stages of Vic Darchinyan's career have in a way mirrored that of the late stages of  Bernard Hopkins' career.  And finally, we'll examine...

Mets-Marlins Preview

The New York Mets have won seven straight over the Miami Marlins, and have not lost when they have faced Josh Johnson this year. Johnson has received very little support all season heading into his final start of 2012 on Monday night in Miami. New York (73-86) is completing its fourth straight fourth-place finish in the NL East while Miami (67-92) is capping its third consecutive...

Phillies, Halladay pick up win over Marlins

MIAMI -- After a rough start, Roy Halladay finished his final outing of the season on a positive note. Halladay (11-8) allowed four runs, three in the first inning, in five innings to help the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Miami Marlins 9-5 Saturday. "The first inning was obviously pretty sloppy," Halladay said. "I felt like after that it got better, we scored...

It’s official, the Phillies are out of the race

The Phillies playoff run is officially over after losing to the Marlins 2-1 last night. It was another “walk-off” loss for the Phillies their 12th this season, personifying the season. No hitting and poor relief pitching ,a formula in many of the Phillies losses and what needs to be addressed in the off-season. We all new it was coming but I have to admit it still hurts. From...
